[help] Porting Sounds To Mac, Please

Greets,

I've created a set of system sounds for Windows XP, based on samples from Portishead, with their permission. The samples are in WAV format, and play during system events such as login, new mail, min/max window, etc. This is purely non-commercial and the sounds are freely available to anyone who wants them.

Could someone please answer these questions so I can offer them to Mac OS9/OSX users?

1. What is the typical audio format used for Mac OS9/OSX system sounds

2. What is the typical compression format (comparable to zip)

I'm also looking for someone willing to write simple instructions for applying the sounds. I would of course give this person due credit in the download, with a link to their website. Following are instructions for XP, to give you an idea what I need:

1. Unpack the zip file to any folder.

2. Copy the WAV files to C:\Windows\Media

3. Open the Sounds and Audio Devices applet in Control Panel, then go to the Sounds tab.

4. Set the sounds you want to use in the Program Events list then click Apply.

5. 5ave your settings, then close the Sounds and Audio Devices applet.

You should now open the Display Properties applet (also in the Control Panel) and save your current theme. This should save the sound scheme as part of the theme (also any mouse cursor settings you may have applied). You may need to repeat these steps if you switch themes.

WAV files will play on the Mac operating system if QuickTime Player is installed. If you have QuickTime Pro then you can open it in the QT Player, and export as a .MOV. But i don't recommend this method.

There are many free apps that simply edit sound files and will resave in other formats, a good program is Amadeus II. From there you can open the WAV files, and export them as MP3 or AAC which are the standard file formats for music (WAV and WMA are not standards). AAC gives the best quality and i think is a bit smaller than an MP3 files, MP4 will give you even smaller files yet.

Probably the most popular compression formats on Mac OS are .sit (OS 9) and .dmg(OS X). Use Stuffit Expander to expand sit files, and DropStuff to create .sit files. Use Mac OS X's Disk Utility to create DMG files.

Thanks for responding! Sorry I haven't checked this thread sooner, I guess the email alert wasn't set correctly.

In setting system event sounds, will OS9/OSX accept WAV files, or do they use another format?

Also, I have all the needed software to convert and pack the files for Mac users, but I desperately need someone to write simple instructions for applying them. Gotta take care of the ****ies, don't want them flooding me with requests for help

As I said before, if someone can do this for me, I'll give them due credit and post the link of their choice on the download page.

I think System Sounds likes .snd files,Use the software you got to export the WAV files to .snd, .snd files are usually labeled as System Sound files in Save/Export dialogs.

Mac OS X doesn't actually even include the feature to important your own custom system sounds because Apple had a few issues with Apple Corp over that entire thing (really stupid huh?)

OSX uses .AIFF format. There are only few sound you can set such as the error sound, trash empty, ichat sounds and mail notification. I hate system sounds. If you want system sounds, you can use Xsounds from unsanity.com.

My boss used to have Worf saying, "Captain, incoming message." for mail notification. It drove everyone nuts.
