Can I change the the icons and whatnot on my computer as .dll files and then make them the .dl_ files they are on the windows disk and just replace them so when I install windows it automatically installs with the icons I chose to replace??

Yes, however you can't just rename the files to .dl_. You have to run makecab on every single file.

And if you put all the new versions of files on an xp cd, you may run into problems after installation, since XP will have all new files even though you didn't ever install all Windows Updates and what-not.
