[help] Windows 98, Is It Usable With Our Stuff

i might be getting a laptop. now i have a copy of windows xp, but the girl im buying it off of said it might run slow. it only has 256 megs of ram(yuk). but it does have a p4 (yeh).

but just to be on the safe side. do the kind of apps we use. aka style xp. object bar. object dock. iconpackager. AVE APPS. YZ APPS, alilms apps, just to name a few i use, work with windows 98?

im want to use this laptop to show off what we do here. and if i cant even use one of the items i listed, that it really wouldn't be worth it.

thanx

XP will run just fine with 256MB of ram. I did it for almost a year before I could afford to upgrade to 1GB.

Stay as far away from 98 as you can.

And to answer your question... No, they will not run on 98.

Wise advice, Win98 not even with a long stick...

I have run XP on a 256 P4 (1.8) machine and it runs rather quickly for what i thought it would...

Just untick some animations for minimize and maximize windows, get rid of sounds and stuff like that, you should be fine.

Just to give a bit more detail, my laptop is an IBM ThinkPad T-23

1.13 Ghz P3, 256MB ram (Upgraded to 1GB) and a really crappy video chipset.

It ran XP very nicely including Office XP, Visio XP and almost all the tweaks from Aqua-Soft.

In short, you P4 will kick it with the best of them.

You can always get more memory later. ;-)

First.. watch who you're calling a n00b. :D

Second... I don't think it's worth waiting 45-60 minutes for the Longhorn install CD to boot on an old P.O.S. just to prove you can install it.

But if you feel like it, go ahead. But don't forget to post some screenies.

You think a P4 with 256 megs of RAM is slow? You think it -looks- slow, because in your mind, you think, hm, there are computers with upwards of a gig of ram, and 2 and 3 gigahertz... this must be crap! But... that's not a great attitude, because, well, first of all, just about anyone who complains about a computer made within the last 5 years being slow is either -really- impatient or they aren't maintaining their computer well. Obviously, if we're talking about gaming or rendering machines, the faster the better, but in terms of just being able to run XP? Pleeaase. My computer is roughly twice as fast as the one you're talking about, and sadly, there are probably a lot of people who would scoff at -my- computer, because there are computers twice as fast as it! (as far as readily available consumer computers go, that is.) So your computer is fine. If it is running slow, the girl probably has Bonzai Buddy running on it and can't think why the heavens it's not zipping along:-)

yap. it's goin to run pretty fast if you just switch off some animations and disable unneeded services. did that on my sisters duron 700 with 256ram and it runs really good

Nearly all my apps will run on Win98

stylexp is only for xp (hence the xp). 9x doesn't have visual styles. wb will work, though.

y'z dock only works on xp, but objectdock should work on 9x.

but with those specs, xp is a better choice, as everyone said.

I'm on my cosin's hp pavilion xt963 running winxp with a 24-bit celeron @1200Mhz with 128MB of ram, with nothing disabled. Kind of sluggish, but it still works just fine.

Nah ! Objectdock use transparancy so it wont work on 9x.

I had a laptop T22 P3 900 and 128 MB of Ram on XP last year and it worked fine but a bit slow with all the aqua tweaks.

But with 256 MB it should be enough...

#196497

if you find your xp running slow you can always switch to win 95 or linux ;)

What are you so worried about?

My parents run Windows XP on a PII-350 with 256MiB RAM, with no worries.

I wouldn't say it's the most zippy of systems, but it's not exactly "slow" for simple uses (read: web browsing, sending e-mail, using Microsoft Office 2003).
