Pearpc Altivec Builds 1ghz G4!

Hey all,

today i downloaded shawn's new standard altivec build and was blown away by the speed that its running at... 1GHZ G4... here's a screenie

Click for screenie

And my I add that it only takes about 60 seconds to boot! :D

the speeds are getting faster each build!! last week i had 975Mhz G4

PC Specs:

AMD Athlon XP 2400+

512MB ram (256 used by pearpc)

80GB HD

Nvidia Geforce FX 5200 128MB 8x AGP

Windows XP Professional

#194702

that build locks up osx for me when set to use a G4. on a G3 i get a 700Mhz one :P

but the previous one got me a 660MHz G4 :)

#194710

Ooh, let me try. I have a 2.41GHz AthlonXP, that's about 3400+

Does that actuallly mean usable speeds tho?!?

#194831

I am posting this thread using the altivec build :)

Menge: if your build locks up it's because you forgot to change the cpu_pvr value in you config file. check out pearpc.net to obtain the correct value.

I must say, i'm really impressed, it's very fast compared to the previous builds and everything seems to work "faster".

I'm on a P4C 2.8ghz@3.0ghz with 512mb pc3200, and it's really cool.

Even the genie effect is almost in real time !

2 enhanced:

did you try to run Photoshop or similar graphics app (Freehand, Illustartor...)?

older build with no Altivec (G3) shows me 500 MHz (@AthlonXP 1800+), the latest build with Altivec

shows me 700MHz (about this mac - window)...but Photoshop is starting up and run lots slower than older on.

2 n3urotic:

the real speed is much slower than ATM shows ... it is still unusable for usual work...

Siwu.. what CPU rating did you get?

@jr008

I have not tried yet

siwu: nope. if it leave on the config as G3 (cpu_pvr = 0x00088302) it runs fine and gives me a 700MHz G3

if i put it a as G4 (cpu_pvr = 0x000c0000) it locks up on boot up.

previous altivec builds (the 24th one on richard goodwin's) worked fine and gave me a fast 660MHz G4 :P

i know what i'm doing man ;)

i've been messing with every single day's nightly build :P

#194970

im running a 1.8 ghz athlon 1 gig of ram and a ati radeon 9200

and im getting specs of a 840mhz g4

#194972

last time i used pearpc it was like .3 pre...lol I was running a 0mhz g3. Wonder if the difference really is as much as people are saying, and if its worth it installing osx again...

#194996

i get a 780 - 800MHz G4 on the linux altivec build from cvs

Yes it is way worth it... there are major speed increases since the first .3pre :P

#195091

Are you guys running Athlon XP optimized builds?

#195103

@enhanced: i get 1.06ghz G4 :)

#195118

What CPU is that siwu?

1.1GHz G4 for me :)

#195125

It runs so fast cause all you guys have so much ram ! 512, 1 gig etc.

I only have 256 :cry:

And a 6 GB swap file :P

I am running the standard Build.. the amd optimized build only gives me 975Mhz G4 but the Standard Gives me 1ghz G4..

Richard Goodwin's Altivec Build's are back up.. I'm going to see what speed i get :P..

Edit: I tested richard's new altivec build and it is insainly slower :( ... 675Mhz G4 :cry:

I think I'll stick with shawn's builds LOL

#195219

I have started getting "invalid pointer operation" errors every time I boot ppc now... I can't get to the boot selection screen :(

#195405

hmm, what build, what OS is pearpc running in, what are your system specs ?

#195546

I've tried all the latest builds - every version gives me the same error.

I'm running 10.3 (works becuase it used to load) on XP.

I've attached my config file if that helps??

You have to change the ppc_start_resolution --->example: "1024x768x32"

here is my config:

#prom_env_bootpath = "disk"

#
#   Drive type will be set according to file extension:
#      .img: Harddisk (filesize must be multiple of 516096)
#      .iso: CD-Rom
#   Or you can override this by specifying the type via
#   pci_ide0_master_type / pci_ide0_slave_type

pci_ide0_master_installed = 1
pci_ide0_master_image = "Change this to the path of your HD Image"

pci_ide0_slave_installed = 0

Hope that helps.. just copy/paste and edit

The CD-Rom drive must also be enabled, and change your redraw level to something like 20 or 30, 70 is way too slow.

You also have your config file "out of order", cpu needs to be declared before memory.

There IS a load order.

Here's my config to use as an example. Works flawlessly.

And yes... I have it configured for 512MB of memory.

ppc_start_resolution = "800x600x32"

redraw_interval_msec = 20

prom_bootmethod = "select"

prom_env_bootargs = ""

prom_env_machargs = "-v"

prom_driver_graphic = "video.x"

cpu_pvr = 0x000c0000

memory_size=0x20000000

pci_ide0_master_installed = 1

pci_ide0_master_image = "macosx_6gb.img"

pci_ide0_master_type = "hd"

pci_ide0_slave_installed = 1

pci_ide0_slave_image = "D:\Apple\10.3_disk1.ISO"

pci_ide0_slave_type = "cdrom"

pci_rtl8139_installed = 1

pci_rtl8139_mac = "de:ad:ca:fe:12:35"

pci_usb_installed = 1

nvram_file = "nvram"

thanks for the replys guys - I'm not getting that error now... but I am getting a new one!

@DoubleD

You need to install some additional software to get networking support for PearPC.

There are details on almost all the PearPC sites on how to set this up.

For now, you can just remark out these lines like this.

#pci_3c90x_installed = 0

#pci_3c90x_mac = "FF:FE:62:C0:5D:79"

#pci_rtl8139_installed = 1

#pci_rtl8139_mac = "de:ad:ca:fe:12:35"

#195843

ah - so thats what that lot means - I had a network setup, but just moved over to a Router! - I've set it up again.

Many thanks - all sorted :)
