[news] Pearpc Altivec Builds

Quite some time has passed since the last major updates to PearPC. But that time has passed and the development is going in big steps again!

There are now some builds that emulate the Altivec instructions of a G4. The Win32 builds can be download from Richard Goodwins website or the PearPC Information Station. The download links can be found below...

The advantage of the new Altivec support is...

--better compatibility in future programs (Tiger already runs better with it)

--more speed, because of the processes floating point math operations can be handled which makes the client faster

--your nifty PearPC installation runs as a G4

linux users can download from the cvs by entering the following into the terminal:

cvs -z 4 -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.sf.net:/cvsroot/pearpc co -r altivec  pearpc

I've posted the text below also on Emaculation.com, but I'm just curious if the predominately skinning community here on AS will be answering the same opinions as the folks at emaculation.com (who are obviously more emulation-orientated).

So, bare with me, please be kind enough to give thoughts on this matter: What are your experiances with the responds of friends on the topic of the emulation of OS X versus the level of enthausiasm when they see OS X skins on your x86 Windows XP pc?

A shame the PearPC communitiy seems to be so small.

Or else the PPC-emulation-developement would go much faster.

The thing is, most people do not seem to get warm over OS X on x86.

You see, what people come over and see for instance my WindowBlinds skin doing Aqua, Milk or Panther they say: "Kewl, that looks much better than XP Luna. Where did you get that."

Also the Dock get's positive response.

People want it too.

But when I speak with them on that matter weeks afterwards they tell me that they got rid of the dock, because: "...the damn thing always appears thenever I don't want it to..." Nice Eye-candy, but not practical seems to be the overall respons.

The real OS X we KNOW to be more practical than M$ Windows (even XP).

With the less confusing strict Apple GUI-guidelines consistancy, stability, hardware-accelerationed windows, Exposé, Safari, finder & dock, et cetera. Only obstacle, besides the steep pricing, holding me back from making the switch is program-compatability. All new, cool games come out on x86 pc, not on PPC OS X. Period. If Apple would bring out an OS X version for x86 I'd buy it instantly. But since that is not the case, I'm stuck with M$ Windows XP forced to skin it as OS X as a neccesary compromise.

When I learned about the existance of this app (PearPC) that could do OS X on x86 I freaked out. Tried fiddling with PearPc since version 0.2 and things got better and better. Ultimately I hope it to become truely practical.

Like in: doing all my surfing, e-mailing, Graphic-editing & Office-apps in OS X through PearPC. Maybe even (dare I say it?)...booting my pc to OS X?

That will probably never be the case with my current specs (K6-2 450 mhz and all... ), but I read about people with modern pc's doing online surfing allready & (i-) chatting allready in OS X through PearPC.

And since I'm saving for a new pc by X-mas and the fact that PearPC get's better and better (faster, jitc, altivec, sdl, even sound allready) grants me hope for the future...eventually ;-)

If only the PearPC community would be as large as the (OS X) skinning community than this developement would go much faster I think.

Guess I have to be patient and wait...and wait...and wait.
