Aqua-Soft ForumsI am currently researching the purchase of an ibook 12inch. What i would like to know is, is the hdd used by the ibook different from a regular IDE drive? It says that it is an ATA drive at the site. I understand laptop drives are different from regular drives. Is there a way to upgrade this drive without sending it into Apple. I want to do this by myself. I have extensive practice on hardware installation on PC Desktops, however absolutely no experience on laptop hardware, let alone Apple hardware. 
I have heard most of the time laptops aren't upgradeable. 
It would be helpful for me if someone got shine some light on the subject.

1. Laptop Hard Drives are 2.5" (most computer stores sell them).
2. The hard drive (at least in my iBook G4 Rev.A 12" ) is a Fujitsu MHT2030AT.

I have replaced hardware on plenty of quicksilver g4 towers. Hard drives, ram, and maybe even a video card. Its not hard at all... i dont know about a laptop though
yea i've heard the g4 and g5 towers are made easily accesible for hardware change. I know at least the relatively newer pc laptops have at least a RAM replacing slot, dont know about the other stuff.
Do not replace the HD in your iBook until the warranty has expired.
Doing so will void your warranty.
Apple does NOT offer HD upgrades for iBooks after they have been purchased.
I have upgraded by HD in my iBook and it was a PITA.
It can be done, you just have to be real careful and layout everything in the order in which you removed it.
Roughly 50+ screws have to be removed to gain access to HD and CD-Rom drive.
