[wip] Fast User Switching

Hey all,

Ok this is a major WIP, but I know its going to be hard to actually do the technical Login/logout part of this, so I thought I'd just preview the effect for you.

Basically, this app will take a screeny of your desktop and then place it on a cube which can rotate (aka Panther). Its not much, but meh I hadn't released anything in a while and I dont want you to get cranky

Use the arrow keys to rotate the cube

1. Ok, to see this youll have to download the Quesa graphics lib from here and stick it in your \Windows\System32 folder.

Get Quesa

2. Then download the app from here (1.15 mb)

Please note:

This wont mess with your login or log you out or anything

This is just a demo, dont expect it to do much other than show you the effect

I coded this for 1024x768 res' feel free to try with higher but it may not look correct

Finally enjoy, just to show the effect can be done... I'll be working on the more complicated stuff soon.

That's outstanding, Alilm! It's so smooth! Would it be possible to use this for switching between multiple virtual desktops (with perhaps, the MS Virtual Desktop switcher) rather than switching users?

I'd think more people use their machines with single user accounts, and a virtual desktop switcher would be really, really useful (kinda like 3ddesktop for Linux)

What would be ideal in my opinion is if a litestep module like rabidvwm would be made to be standalone and then this could be added to it. Rabidvwm is in my opinion the best virtual desktop manager on windows it's fast, works smooth and can show a pager which can be set to snapshot the individual windows. Oh yeah, the source code is readily available for RabidVWM which is a plus.

Great work on that alilm!

But you ppl have to realize that the REALLY REALLY hard feature in this is actually to switch to another user in a programation manner.

Once someone manages to do that, then you will see lots of apps of this kind

Well I don't know for sure, but it would seem that it would be easier respectively to do this cube thing ala virtual desktops, and it would be a very attractive way of presenting them.

On the actual switching of users, there's definitely a way, its just undocumented and so takes a little work

About the virtual desktops thing, Ill do it If I have time, and if its possible.

I agree... it'll be much better make this app to have some sort of virtual desktops instead of user accounts... he is so right, many of us have a PC with a single user account because we are the only one who can understand the mess in it...

92mg sys usage i dont want fast user switching that much. but i guess thats only because its a demo. oh and only the first transition works with your current res, after that it takes only the center 1024x768 of your desktop.

i know the res issue was discussed but i just thought i would mention it

Alilm, you have my full support on this, anything that I can do to help out I will do.

Also, I would ask that it be fast user switching, not virtual desktop. Think about it Alilm you will be world famous!!!

Also I am sure it would help Alilm loose the will to do this (since it IS undocumented and he has to completely rewrite the Gina.dll) if you were to donate into his pay pal account

I can't answer this, but smoke did mention something before on the first page. You might want to check that out if you haven't already
