[ann] The All-new Apple Ipod

I'd post a news item about it, but the front page is down, so the forum will have to do.

From MacRumors, Think Secret, MacMinute, and iPod Lounge:

The cover of the July 26th issue of Newsweek reveals the much-rumored next generation iPod, which is expected to be unveiled early next week. The new digital music device appears to be slightly smaller in size than the third generation model and sports a new scroll wheel very similar to the one found on Apple's iPod mini. The new iPod also retains a black and white screen (sorry folks, no color this time). Newsweek's headline reads: "iPod, Therefore i Am. Steve Jobs and The Must-Have Music Player Everyone Is Talking About."

I personally don't care too much for it. I thought touch buttons were the best thing since sliced bread, so I don't care too much for the "button" idea. Battery life, storage size, and pricing may be enough to take advantage of my service warrenty, though...

Actually, juno, I heard that the best way to ensure replacement is to stick it in the microwave for 1-2 seconds. That way nothing will melt, but you can guarantee it will never work again. Not that anyone would do that, of course... <_<

I just remembered that my warranty expires on august 2 (my birthday)

Will they have the new ipod out by then? Will they give me it when I go to the store and say mine wont work? I really dont want to pay 100$ for a replacement battery too...

I agree. I see bearlly no difference. Apple is getting really uncreative. They used the same clicker type menu pad is in the mini expcept this one looks soft. I still like my 3D gen better too. Maybe uf they add a color dispaly that shows album art and aslo release a 50 or 60 gb version...then I would consider coughing up cash. ALSO

My 4g iPod wishlist,

• 50 or 60 bg model

• Color display

• Album art viewer.

• Bigger display

• The option to show use different backlight colors (changable thru the menu)

If the price is lower by a good amount (say £50+) then I may consider buying one. I think they look great, anyway. Plus, I can get discount through my dad's place of work. Which is handy. But at the moment I've got around £280 lying around and it's a toss up between getting a digital camera or an iPod. What do you ladies think I should get?

My Wishlist:

- Colour display (obivously)

- Video support (so you can play videos on it aswell as music - of course with the new colour screeen)

- Water/Shock/Dust Proof cover

- Back to the 2G style (still the best design they did )

July 26 issue - Veteran Podsters understand that at least once a year Apple performs a feat that at once infuses them with dread and delight: an iPod upgrade. The delight comes from a new look and new capabilities. The dread comes from the realization that you’re a step behind the cutting edge and must consider whether to buy your way back on it.
And here it goes again. The considerably tweaked fourth-generation iPod will roll out this week, and NEWSWEEK got an advance peek. It looks a bit different, operates more efficiently, has a few more features and costs less. Here are the highlights.
The click wheel. The iPod keeps getting slimmer and more streamlined. While the initial version had a relatively boxy feel, subsequent versions have been curvier and smaller. This one is about a millimeter thinner and, more significantly, eliminates the control buttons that sat under the display screen. Instead, it uses a "click wheel," where the controls are placed on the compass points of the circular touchpad that lets you scroll through menus. This is an innovation carried over from the diminutive iPod Mini. "It was developed out of necessity for the Mini, because there wasn’t enough room [for the buttons]," says Steve Jobs. "But the minute we experienced it we just thought, ’My God, why didn’t we think of this sooner?’ "
New features. You can create multiple on-the-go playlists and delete songs from those ad hoc mixes. And audiobooks are not only easier to find, you can listen to them at normal speed, slower or 25 percent faster, without its sounding like a Munchkin.
Longer play. Coast-to-coasters rejoice: the new iPods are rated for 12 hours of rockin’ between charges—a 50 percent boost in battery life. This is accomplished, Apple says, not by a heavier battery but diligent conservation of power.
Lower price. The top-of-the-line iPod, holding 10,000 songs (40 gigs, as geeks will tell you), now costs $399. The lower-capacity model, with room for 5,000 songs (20 gigs), costs $299. That’s a $100 price reduction for each. (There’s no more 15-gig model.)
Color. Fuggedaboutit. Despite rumors to the contrary, the wide-bodies are still as pure as the driven snow.
Bottom line: If you have yet to jump on the iPod bandwagon, it’s cheaper and more attractive to do so. If you’re already plugged in, the question is whether you should engage in the "iPod Bump," where you snap up the spiffy new version and pass Old Reliable to a grateful friend or family member (or the highest eBay bidder). If your music collection has exceeded your iPod’s storage space, or your listening binges exceed your current iPod’s battery life—or if you want to hear Bill Clinton’s abridged book in 4-1/2 hours rather than six—consider the Bump this time around. Of course, if your heart went aflutter at the very sight of this year’s model, you’re probably in line at the Apple Store already.

@ Infinity - how about a replacement program for current 3G owners? <_<

if they don`t give the current 3G owners at least one more firmware update all hell`s gonna break lose. :rant:

1st and 2nd gen users had 4-5 firmware updates, 3rd gen users had updates from 2 to 2.0.1 and now to 2.0.2. (which didn`t bring ANYTHING new) <_<

Why does everyone keep asking for colour screen and video players? want a DVD aswell?

Ive had a 3G iPod for a while now and I LOVE IT! but I select a song or album and then the things in my pocket never to be seen again until the playlists finished or unless I show it off to get iPod envy I seriously dont see the point in album art the thing tells you the album already.

everyone seems to want everything on the iPod its the worlds best music player IMO lets leave it that way and see what the future holds every item now seems to do everythin mobiles with cameras, PDAs with MP3 and Wi-Fi, now people want video iPods one word people Laptop

I say leave the iPod alone its perfect as it is just needs more customising features and things such as video players etc would be nice in-time but I would think the iPod would grow insize and Apple wont let that happen. I dont really like the look of the new iPod dosnt seem to be ANY difference at all its just a smaller 3G with a iPod mini wheel and in grey?!?!?!?

I guess Ill have to wait to see the thing in person but if the thing gets any smaller Ill lose it >.<

p.s. you can actually chage the 3Gs backlight but it does involve servicing theres a company that does it they also change the colour of the button lights aswell.

I actually liked the moving wheel on the 1G iPods best. And having seperate buttons around the wheel, not tapping the wheel like on the 4G and Mini.
