Od+ Questions, And A Tip

Saw the previous OD+ topic was closed, very unfortunate since I was very interested in reading about the program. hopefully another one can exist without people fighting.

I was dismayed to learn about the lack of options with the tabbed interface. I have paid for a couple of Dragthing licenses on the Mac (sincearound 1998 or so) , and have been frantically looking for something like it on Windows ever since. These OS X dock clones don't do it for me at all, they pale in comparison to Dragthing in terms of flexibility and efficiency. In a nutshell, I think Dragthing is the greatest desktop utility ever invented, especially in its current version.

Before I go on, I really recommend Cooltabs to anyone looking for a nice tabbed launcher/dock. It's the only thing coming close to Dragthing on Windows today, in my opinion. Every critical feature is adjustable (show/hide timeouts, hot edges, folder submenus, etc.). Check it out at http://www.alerma.com.

Regarding OD+, is there an option like in YzDock to browse folders via regular submenus? Those Flyout Menus just look to me engineered to be flashy instead of useful, and while having both flashiness and usefulness is the holy grail, usefulness must come first in my book.

Also, does it show when running full-screen 3D apps/games? This is a common problem with that type of app, where it will show on top of your running game.

Are any of the speeds adjustable? By this I mean hide timeout, show timeout, movement speed, etc. Also, what triggers the Dock to be shown? Is it hovering over the tab area or is there some other way of having the dock reveal itself?

Thanks for any comments.

hmmm i don`t see a tip in ur post but i`ll try to respond to some of ur qs.

1. Making a shortcut to the folder and then ctrl+click will bring a normal submenu for that folder.

2. i haven`t tried it but i think in this version it can pop-up in full screen games. But Jeff has said he has fixed that for the next version

3. speeds are adjustable in the OD+

4. u can set the dock to be activated via hotspots, clicking on the tab or hovering over the tab. take a better look next time. it`s not hidden or anything.

Er... did you miss the whole paragraph where NSiNSiNSi recommends that people check out Cooltabs? That's his tip...

to me it looks more like a CoolTabs recomendation than a OD tip ;)

It didn't explicitly say an OD+ tip, just "a tip." :P

well if it isn`t OD related than it`s in the wrong section ;)

I tried cooltabs and it was too flakey and it didn't look good either. I could not find skinning options that come anywhere close to OD+. With OD+ you can make skins that are just like Dragthing. I also couldn't change the size of the icons in cooltabs as large as OD+ and it even caused my system to reboot. So for me, OD+ is better. I tried cooltabs not too long before I tried OD+ and it just didn't work out for me.

When I first started OD+ I was like hey this is much better than cooltabs. Yes there are hot spot configuration just like Dragthing and delay configuration. The only things that are missing is changing tabs by hovering over another tab and put a toolwindow border around the program.

As for the tip thing. "a tip" was in the same sentance as Objectdock so one would think that it is in the same subject. It should have been. "Objectdock questions and an alternative.", or something along those lines. Or just leave that part out.

Is it really that big of a problem that I asked some questions about ObjectDockPlus and then used the word "tip" to point out that I would be recommending a piece of software I thought some people might enjoy?

Also, I guess I didn't make it clear, but I have not tried OD+ yet. It seems to be only for paying customers and I am not buying it before I can try it.

Thanks for the feedback on OD+ however.

Regarding Cooltabs, you're right, there's no skinning capability to it, but you can make fairly clean looking docks with it and it behaves nicely. Very stable (for me anyways), supports full, real drag and drop, has integrated folder navigation menus and something that's impotant to me: the option to reveal the location of any item in the Dock in Windows Explorer. But definitely not as visually polished as OD+, which is why I'm interested in checking it out.

I don't think you can disable the systray-icon at the moment.

As for playing full screen games with OD (+) on, I've just been

playing ePSXe (playstation emulator :naughty: ), which is very

processor-intensive for my CPU ... but no slowdown and no dock or tab

disturbingly coming to the front. Amazing.

I've put OD propeties --> positioning --> Z-ordening to 'normal' and mouse-activation on. Could this be the reason for it not to disturb?

I've recently made the switch from Y'z to Object Dock.

Haven't regret it eversince. OD just keeps evolving,

my compliments to the creators!

i also swtiched from y'z after jumping from different docks for a while..

and my settings are

Z ordering always on bottom use mouse activation on.

sucks about not being able to turn off the systray icon yet..

man i should get the newer ver of epsxe i haven't kept up with any of that lately..

well im just using a single tabbed dock (with a hidden normal dock to help with some little bugs) and with the dock, just unchecking the 'always on top' option made it so that it never pops up in games. when i run a normal dock i always set things to 'always behind' with mouse activation.
