[help]motherboard Question

I'm thinking of upgrading my computer. I've already sourced a new powersupply to cope with the additional drives I've added over the last year.

My main problem is I was thinking of upgrading my processor, as the lower end ones are quite cheap, just to keep me going a bit longer.

I'm currently running an AMD 1700XP, and I need to find out what my motherboard is so I can see what the max processor is I can fit without upgrading. Does anyone know a way/or where to look for this information. I've tried looking on the MotherBoard but there are no markings at all.

find an app called belarc advisor... it gives a complete profile of your systems hardware/software, includes what motherboard you have.

If i were you i would get a decent motherboard and overclock your 1700. The 1700 is natorious for overclocking, ive heard people getting it up to 2.5GHZ (it runs at like 1.6GHZ i think, or around). I doubt your motherboard will support anything over a realy old 266FSB 2600 (i think the FSB can only reach 266), and good luck finding one of thoes, the fastest you could probaly find is 2400, a speed which the 1700 could likley easily do without a voltmod.

Ok you'll have to excuse me for not being a techie - but how do you 'overclock' a processor?

you overclock by changing the front side bus (fsb) or multiplier. the clock speed is calculated as bus speed x multiplier. thus, increasing either value will increase the clock speed.

you must have good cooling to overclock, as the heat can damage the cpu.

also, you might need to play around with the voltages (e.g. vcore) for stability.
