I had it on my second HD a while back. Still have lots of screenies. :)

Anyone want them ?

#187195

I heard you will need a 64 mb 3D card to run it, is this a joke?

Perhaps it's a process in the background to slow it down? it just can't be that GUI?

#187230

looks nice but:

:staffs here: Warez links :staffs here:

#187276

if when you say new you mean the 4074, yeh :D

and yes, for 3d eye candy, you need a hefty vid card

#187288

The ironic thing is that Quartz and Quartz Extreme runs well on a wider range of Video cards... and yes they do use more than one (epsecially when you are counting different models of mac's).

Ugh. So ugly.

I don't understand how anyone at Microsoft could approve Luna. I mean, not that I'm saying that I could think of anything better, but graphically, there are certain things that make sense for a gui. Aqua is brilliant, but getting something simple and attractive should not be a stumper for a multi-billion dollar corporation. This is just grotesque, and, of all things, a step down from a gui that was already disgusting (and thankfully, replaceable:-D)

Longhorn... just... confuses me. I haven't seen a single thing about Longhorn that would compel me to upgrade to it even if, and I'm very serious, even if they paid me to use Longhorn instead of XP, well... the price would have to be pretty high.

Terrible terrible terrible.

 <-- I'm confused at how ugly Longhorn is

IT'S A BLOODY ALPHA. My god people come on! Look at all the threads on this, it's an alpha, it's not a public one, the people that do have it (not me I might add) understand this. It's probably not going to look like that, it's there so that developers can see the foundations of the OS, things like WinFS, Avalon and Indigo. Not so everyone can go "yuk it's ugly". Now, repeat the contents of the box below a few times

I will not judge pre-release alpha software on looks alone

#187383

Exactly, MS already said you won't be seeing the looks of Longhorn until later this year at the earliest, So I don't know why you guys are saying it's ugly, it's not even how it's going to look in the end. Besides I'm sure you guys can do better.........It's a ALPHA you won't start seeing the looks until Beta stage at most

#187385

Alpha or no Alpha opinion on GUIs are just that opinions... just because one person dosnt like it dosnt mean everyelse wont aswell. I am a big fan of Luna when I re-install XP I always leave it on because I think its a really nice style and I really like the Royale theme.

So you cant say things like "I don't understand how anyone at Microsoft could approve Luna." because your opinion is you dont like it so you wont see how anyone else will. Yes I agree Aqua is really nice but Im sure there are a growing number of people who are sick of Aqua by now.

It all comes down to personal tastes which is why programs like WindowBlinds become so successful but personally I really like MS's GUIs.

Peoples opinions are not the point here, the point is people bashing an unfinished piece of software. How can you judge it (and form an opinion) when it's no where near release quality?

The man said Luna which is used in XP which is finished whether Longhorns Alpha or not you are not going to see vast changes to current styles. Yes I know the release style has not been seen yet but thats the point! He his basing his opinion on the Alpha look which is why its an opinion.

Just because it aint a release dosnt mean its cant be judged... hell go over to Spymac those dam Mac cultists are in force against Longhorn.

It's amazing how many defensive people try to argue against something, and start out by being condescending and assuming the person with whom they disagree doesn't know anything about the topic at hand.

Um... I'm criticizing an unfinished product because if what they've shown so far isn't an indicator of what's to come, then what have they been doing? If the final product isn't going to even vaguely resemble the builds that have been released now, what's the point of alpha testing? Even if there are vast improvements to the GUI from what has been released now, it's already pretty apparent that they're heading down the wrong path. That's what my opinion is based on.

And sure, you're allowed to like the Luna style. Just like people are allowed to drive around in those horrible aqua-colored cars, even though they're quite obviously hideous :6

So... sorry that you're so defensive, but the thing is a piece of crap... or, if they're going to come up with a miracle and release something incredible, these prereleases aren't going to resemble that at all, because these are terrible. You'll just have to learn to deal with it.

OK, I was willing to fight your case but your not making sense now "You'll just have to deal with it" no correction you will I dont mind Longhorn and can I ask have you tried Longhorn? Because the whole poiunt of an operating system is to run your PC not to look pretty for every individual user they have to create a simple nice style that will suit the majority and calling it a piece of crap just because YOU dont like how it looks is childish <_<

I think we should leave it there....

Working on the underlying code, and telling this operating system exactly how to operate a system. Honestly, the look of an OS should be the VERY LAST thing anyone bothers to work on; as long as the essential areas are accessable during development, for testing purposes, the appearance of it really doesn't matter.

To show developers the possibilities with the new APIs and programs available in this version of Windows.

The actual UI is being developed seperately from the rest of the OS, from what I understand (though confirmation on this point would be nice), under a different project and has not yet been shown to the public. For all we know, it very well COULD look radically different.

Cool, the monthly "Longhorn sucks --- get over it its just an alpha" thread is back!

I thought it only came around when new builds of Longhorn were leaked or presented... seems I was wrong.

Would be nice if people would get their facts straight and put things into perspective before bashing things though.

Just as a followup: For all those saying "Windows Longhorn Sucks! It's slow, buggy, and looks like crap!" I have a couple of slides to show you from Paul Thurrott's Windows Super Site:

longhorn_4074_talk_08.jpg

The UI for Longhorn won't even be included in Longhorn until Beta 2. Knowing this, it's pretty tough to judge how Longhorn will look when it's complete. May be unattractive now, but just wait. ;)

longhorn_4074_talk_20.jpg

This is for those of you complaining about speed/stability. As you can see, we've got another 7 months or so before the first beta is even released, and over another year after that before the full OS is planned to hit shelves. Alot can be done in 7 months. Even more in almost two years.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I just saw these slides today (yes, I know, they've been on his site since the beginning of the month..) and I thought they summed things up really well... and besides, everyone likes pictures.

The UI doesn't suck, keep it, dump it i don't care. All i care about is the underlying code. It had better be a huge departure from their current architecture or it just wouldn't be worth it.

I use classic anyways, so UI doesn't bother me one bit.
