Aqua-Soft ForumsIf you use FAT32 and an NTSF drive how can you password protect a folder in the NTSF drive using WindowsXP Pro? I know that Microsoft has an explanation but it is goooblick goo to me since you need to know about all kinds of priviledges and settings. Can you give a more straightforward answer?

folder options -> uncheck use simple file sharing
make a new unprivlilged account using computer management console
set a password for that user
right click the folder you wanna share
security, share, permissions , remove all entries, and add the username u jus created
select the apporipirate permissions you want, then apply and ok
now that share will only be accessable by adminitrators, and that user

What are you doing with the folder, do you need it protected on your computer or on the network. If you are using it on a network and want only one layer of password protection for all your folders, there is a great little hack you can do to xp that brings back to some small extent share level access (password protected, but no need for individual accounts) First re-enable the guest account (i know what you are thinking, but don't worry) Then go to the administrator tools in the control panel. Then go to computer management and in that go to the local users and groups and select users. Then right click on Guest and choose set password. This accomplishes two things, you guest account on your local computer will be password protected, and on the network people will be prompted for the guest password before they can even connect to your computer to do anything. This does have the major disadvantage of being "all or nothing" I joke that windows xp has either file sharing for dummies or file sharing for mcse's and nothing in between like they had in 9x (did i just say 9x had a redeeming feature, wow) Hope this is what you are looking for. I'm a college student and wanted to post my pictures on the netowrk and allow people to add and modiify them, I would never let that happen if there were no passwords (and even with a password probably its a bad idea but thats besides the point) It was much easier doing this hack than setting up 20 accounts with different usernames and passwords for people to remember
