[debate]dashboard

granted all we have to go by with apples latest toyes are screenshots but what do u think of dashboard. some elements of it look cool. like the address book. but the date book and the calculator look kinda fugly.

and it works just like expose in that u push one button and they all pop up on there own layer above the desktop.

i think some of these are defently with trying to make for us . like the itunes controller. and the clock.

All I know is that if I was Arlo from Konfabulator I'd be pissed... ;)

That is true. Apple is just incorperating features that people have made for Panther into what they call Tiger..And yes I do dig the Dashboard.. :D But the Finderbar is EXACTLY the same as in Glossy Milk..More creators will get made at apple..

#183153

A cool feature is that with a hotkey you can bring them all to the front, and not have them cluttering up your desktop, but other than that, Konfabulator is already great.

#183161

 haha, look at the front page of konfabulator

it looks like a hybrid between a 'desperate last ditch effort to SELL NOW! SELL NOW! the ship is going down!' and 'OMG! we've been legitimized by dashboard, pack everything on the front page now for the sales stampede!'

this thread is interesting too

poor konfabulator...

The idea wasn't original at all. It's that simple.

Those are the breaks, this is a free market. Apple isn't exactly a "crushing monopoly", if Dashboard really is a cheap ripoff, people will continue to buy Konfabulator.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't DesktopX out before Konfabulator? I know there are earlier examples, but considering DesktopX is so similar (same generation), this would end the "stolen idea" debate.

This is like saying all new word processors are ripoffs of MS Word.

#183200

They want to stop the programmer of Yzdock because it was to similar to the Mac dock but they doing the the same think to Konfabulator.

Damn Apple

#183212

Regardless...some people over at the Konfabulator forums seem to think this might be a good opportunity to port Konfabulator over to Windows or maybe even Linux.

But let's not forget whom create the "gloss" look in the first place.

You can't blame Apple for wanting to use their own style when people have done similar things before them.

Addition: Oh my god!!! I just looked at the QT!!! What the hell is up with the blue-corners?! The Apple Menu now looks "Start-menu" like.. Ugh.. <_< >.<

i think the point is more that it isn't a developer-friendly approach by apple(ie. present developers, not future developers), in what is a smaller 3rd party app market.

which leads to:

Those are the breaks, this is a free market. Apple isn't exactly a "crushing monopoly"

which is actually wrong. This is exactly a textbook monopolist action. It doesn't matter whether or not an action is legal or not (copyright/patent wise) or moral or immoral (is it the right thing to do?), its a simple matter of; is a company displaying overpowering market subsector share (apple compatible products) and pushing other companies out of business.

the fact is, if apple had the same industry market share (pc compatible products), their present structure would have been attacked before ms's would have been. This isn't their fault, its their strength (well integrated software suite, not to mention hardware at all).

on the other hand, you can tell the konfab team would use the same sort of tactics if they were in the same position (ie. see their responses to "konfabulator wasn't first")

ps. there is no free market on planet earth.

they've been in progress for over a year... the developer they had porting it for them suppossedly was trying to 'establish independence' so they gave him the jack boot.

i have a sneaking suspician that the developer behind kapsules is said perp :naughty:

konfabulator site seems to be down. Man, it does suck. I hope the patented some stuff.

As I understand it Konfabulator is not patented. I suppose he could still file for a defensive patent in an emergency like this.... -_-

#183295

Hit the K forums and reply to the "Port to Windows" thread. Tell them to bring Konfabulator to Windows.

#183929

Nevermind, they ARE porting it to Windows. How did I miss that one!?

The fact that Arlo released Konfabulator with the feature Konspose just a few days ago is ironic. He's complaining about Apple ripping off ideas when he has done the same thing - wrap Expose in his tool. Can you blame Apple for taking a good idea and doing it right? Konfab has always been the tool that looks great but lacks efficiency. Hopefully Apple will fix all of that. I guarantee if Konfab had been efficient, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Topic Moved.

This belongs in Mac OS discussion, methinks.

For those of us that already have and use Konfabulator, I think we'll agree it should be downright fantastic having the same functions integrated seemlessly into OS X, like Expose, with a truly negligable hit to system reources, and for freakin free. If it's *half* as good as Expose, where I can be watching a video shifting in and out of tiles view with a dozen or more open apps.... aw hell, I just can't wait for 10.4 to come out.

#184082

For anyone who's interested, and hasn't already seen it, there's a superb article on Daring Fireball which basically debunks all of the "Apple ripped off/screwed Konfabulator" claims...

i sure agree. my problem is taht im stuck with windows xp. its not that im too poor to get a mac, its just that i find it more fun to make my computer look like a mac and still have more software to choose from...PC software better suits my needs. eh, maybe thatll change in a few years. butt yeah, i dont think 10.4 looks like nething warrants a new release like that. its hould be a fre download or free upgrade. i mean hey, THERE MIGHT BE A BEHIND-THE-SCENES IMPROVEMENT! like how much sys resources all the background progs uses so taht when ur idling ur computer is hardly at work. or maybe itll BETTER streamline everything. well see.

So many typos.. -_-

Anyway, as Contra said; Apple ability to update the whole system and Kernal to the last stable stuff means a faster OS overall. Plus Developers have already said Tiger feels even faster than (The already speedy) Panther.. So I presume it can only get faster..

Addition!: Daring Fireball has a very nice (and in-depth) look on the whole Dashboard-vs-Konfabulator thing.. I'd suggest people read it (before anyone else says "THEY RIPPED IT!"). Clickie to read.

I wish konfabulator would just shut up. Apple is smart for doing this, and its about time that people dont have to pay for it. (as a seperate add on) I guess they just cant take that their time is over, and apples time is now. I dunno... Thats one of the things I DO like about Tiger.

Apple were far from smart by making such an arrogant move. Theyre basically telling developers, "Come develop for OSX, and if we like your idea we'll take it and integrate it into the shell"

While I dont feel that the guys at Konfabulator have much grounds to complain about, you can bet alot of smaller developers will think twice before releasing their next big OSX project.

Moreover, I think Konfabulator will win out of this anyway, by expanding onto the windows platform theyre gonna target alot more end users and Konfabulator already has hundreds of beautiful widgets for it.

Perhaps Apple should have remembered that if it ain't broke, dont fix it.

EDIT:

I think perhaps what is so frustrating out of this is that Apple are basically trying to bankrupt the Konfab guys which is lame for such a big company with inferior software.
