Hi, I'm just wondering if I've got something major or something minor going on in my comp...
Basically, I started playing with shells about three months ago(have since given up for the time being) and after installing and configuring BB4win(my first and only for a while) I had a message pop up that said something along the lines of, "Did you know something was wrong here?" and an OK button. I clicked on the button and the new message stated, "I knew you were smarter than that", and then it went away. At it's time of initial appearance, I was unaware that it was in a Windows Error Message Box, as I was using BBWinSkin, and was offline and hadn't been connected for some three weeks. I had probably run Stinger around a week earlier, so a month prior to receiving the first message. I assumed that it was a cool feature of BlackBox that told me I had configured something wrong and was written by a sarcastic programmer. This is incorrect. After giving up on BB, the same message appeared in Explorer(When I noticed that it was an error message) and Litestep. It showed up only on start up and possible 1 out of every 3 startups.
Later, or maybe prior to the shell switchbacks, the message changed and had the caption title of "Damn." and stated, "I'm really getting sick of sitting here, maybe you should tell them that I'm here" with an OK button. I ran Stinger for the first time since receiving the message, stinger got rid of a bunch of ****, which means that in a weeks time of being on the network I got somewhere around 11 infections of things(not clear on descriptions of these evil things). Unfortunately, after my second startup post Stinger there came the error message again.
Next came another error message which said something about how whoever was doing this wouldn't write these things if they weren't so bored. The computer begins to freeze if left idle for more than twenty five minutes.
Now, the final kick in the ass. Last night configuring things that have been running for months, just tweaking them, everything becomes ultra slow and many things are running buggily. Takes somewhere around twenty minutes to load NeXplorer 1.9, I could do other things while waiting, but it was slower than hell. I defrag(which I do every two days anyway) and things are a little better, but Style XP, which has run fine for months tells me on startup that it doesn't load with my version of XP. Object Dock is not able to be configured and Derek's Tab script runs all sorts of screwy. The Dock(OD) forgets to show some active tasks, and some upon minimization disappear completely(not in Taskmanager either).
I haven't touched my registry in over two weeks, probably more, and the only other real change was installing several Ave Apps and updating Samurize.
Is this similar to anything anyone has expereinced before, or am I ranting in vein? I'd rather not reformat and start over, many of my apps are on CD now, but I can't burn anything from that computer to disk and I've got bucketloads of freeware that I use from time to time and would need to search for again, along with music, videos, and countless unbacked up graphics files I've done for projects.
If anyone knows of anything helpful short of buying a Mac, sorry, soldiers don't make much money I've got what I've got, please tell me.
Thanks,
Ian Keeler
