[link] Object Dock 1.02 Relased!

ObjectDock will always remain freeware.

We are, however, working on an ObjectDock Plus which will have tabs, system tray support (with replaceable icons, very cool), start menu support, auto-hide edge docking where only the tabs show up, multiple docks, and a bunch of other things.

But that would be a seperate program. ObjectDock itself would remain free and would keep getting updates in the relevant areas.

thanks for the update!

one bug i have never seen fixed is sometimes when you haev your mouse over an icon.. and you click it and it bounces, it Speeds up reallly fast until you mvoe your mouse off of it. or when its bouncing and your mouse is over it, move your mouse up and down fast, so does the bouncing. its not that big of a deal but kinda annoying see it spaz out once and a while hehe

Is it really worth it? Hasn't used OD since 2003 (still using yz)? Has it gotten better, or is yz still the best? Took all of 7 seconds to DL :woot: Yes, I'm on 10mbit at home ($US33/month).

@ babypapichullo - you my freind are a complete moron. PPle who know me, know i`m not ussualy rude but you deserve it. I don`t get the point of posting things like "Stupid Stardock they could never get it right" etc. Of course things would be much different if you posted bugs and/or made a program that would surpass Stardock's. Jeff and Brad have given us a FREE program without which i couldn`t work on my PC and u **** on their work. If ur using Yz, that`s fine, i`m not but u don`t see me beatching about bugs of Yz, do u? Have u ever heard the proverb: Degustibus non diputandum? Next time if you don`t have anything nice to say, or if you don`t have any constructive critisism, SHUT YOU MOUTH!

@ others saying Yz's better - why are u posting that here? This thread isn`t about Yz, it`s about ObjectDock so please refrain from posting things like "Yz r0x0r3 m3 s0x0rzzz"

/end rant

@ Jeff and Brad - Thanks for all the work u invested in this great prog. I wouldn`t be able to use my PC without it and i`m sure going to buy ObjectDock Plus as soon as it comes out. Please forgive my rant and disregard the whinings by some pple. An thanks for the update and the info about OD+ :)

PS any release date for OD+? ;)

I'm glad you guys are still improving this program. :) Hopefully some of the suggestions below are already part of the "something big" you mentioned:

  • At start-up, perform the "Autohide" code. Currently you have to check and then un-check Autohide or the icons tend to get stuck in a magnified state.
  • While the Dock is animating, have both the icons AND labels appear on top of all other windows.
  • Make sure that no part of the Dock extends beyond the screen edges--ever.
  • Have Command Prompt windows show up in the running tasks section.
  • Be able to stick the running tasks section anywhere on the Dock (e.g. in between the Recycle Bin and the main icons).
  • Have an exclusion list, or at least be able to hide the icons in the running tasks section if their program appears on the Dock.
  • If you have OD switch to the currently running program instead of opening a new instance, and multiple windows exist for an app., subsequent clicks should switch the focus to the next window.
  • Handle separators differently so they can be thinner.

Thanks for continuing to support this utility. I'm looking forward to the next version! :D

I'm using Objectdock at the moment and am very impressed with the functionality of the integrated toolbar. One bug which doesn't seem to have been addressed in this release is that sometimes the taskbar feature just stops working. Clicking on a open program does not bring it to focus or minimize/maximise. I can still minimise via right clicking on the taskbar dock icon but that's not a easy as simply clicking. Just hoping this bug will be fixed soon. That plus the stuff listed above.. :canadian:

#179838

The delivered my old wish on this version... when you drag a shotcut to the OD it creates a shortcut to the target of the first one... last version do a shortcut to the shortcut. Amazing. Cool.

Waiting for the BIG things!!

Unbeliever: I aim to please :) and i think the new additions i've made in DockPlus are going to be some of my best work yet. Still working hard on it as we speak. Thanks much for the support! Currently looking at another couple weeks of dev, and then couple weeks of testing. To toss out some new inside info, the release will be a final 2.0 NOT beta release. And I'll be putting out updates regularly to repond to user feedback for feature enchancements.

MadMike:

If I am able to identify this, this would be available free. Can you tell me if it still happens in v1.02? I for one have been unable to reproduce it, but have heard some complain and am confused at to why it would happen! I fixed some things in v1.02 that could be releated maybe to this mysterious problem, so lemmie know if its still something i need to be looking for or not.

>While the Dock is animating, have both the icons AND labels appear on top of all > other windows.

Only when not on top (e.g. normal window ordering is set and the dock isnt' activated but you're animating it) would the text labels not be on top...nor the icons. If you have it AOT and this isn't acting as it should (and in v1.02 too) lemmie know, 'cause thats not right.

>Make sure that no part of the Dock extends beyond the screen edges--ever.

Unforunatly i don't know if theres much of a solution for that. The main problem with that is that if you say have a huge mouseover and tons of little icons filling the screen, well then you have a couple options. One, the problem could be "solved" by not allowing the small icons to get any larger in their small state than to overflow when zoomed. Which would result in some pretty small icons! Basically it would have to pretend it's zoomed at all times and consider how small all the other icons need to be to make it fit and then have them always be that size on relaxed state. Don't know if that would look good. Alternativly, the other icons could shrink on mouseover as the zoomed icon gets larger, thus a balance and nothing goes off screen. Original builds of ObjectDock did this years years ago. Heh didn't look good. So not sure if i know a solution...

>Have Command Prompt windows show up in the running tasks section.

done, and done. I don't get notifications from them like normal windows, but I added smart detection specifically to find them. Actually, you'll find this in v1.02, i saw that as a general fix for all. Is that in the new-stuff-list that went out with it? not sure, haha i tend to forget all the little things I put in.

>Be able to stick the running tasks section anywhere on the Dock (e.g. in between the >Recycle Bin and the main icons).

Well here's the one question I have for everyone with this request... I mean I could potentially turn off the restriction of having tasks on one side or another. But then where would new tasks be added! Lets say you've crafed your nice little dock:

|shortcut| |shortcut |shortcut| |separator| |window| |window| |window| |recyclebin|

So i mean its going to have to add new tasks to one side or another, and if you tell it to put new tasks on the right, well then the recycle bin's not going to be on the end anymore. Just can't quite get anything like that in til i figure out that puzzle! Can't be "well put it after windows that currently show up" either, since at any point the window count could goto zero and that reference point would be lost. Plus that would probably be a little confusing. Any suggestions?

> Have an exclusion list, or at least be able to hide the icons in the running tasks > section if their program appears on the Dock.

Good suggestion. We were looking at a filtering system for later versions of plus, but perhaps I could add in a simple exclusion list to this coming one and redesign the system later. Good tip

>If you have OD switch to the currently running program instead of opening a new >instance, and multiple windows exist for an app., subsequent clicks should switch the >focus to the next window.

Great tip. Not in now, but i will definitely look to do that! Saved in the todo ;)

> Handle separators differently so they can be thinner.

mathematics aren't made happy by this idea unfortunatly. I guarantees on this being better, but i can guarantee the effor that i have put in tryin to find this already and that effort will continue when not working on more standing issues.

thanks for the feedback guys very helpful :D

[Help]

i am new to object dock 1.02

i 'm kinda confused cuz i can't make it on top by moving the pointer over

and the bouncing effect is too extravagant for me

and another thing, the lucida grande font seems without cleartype, looks really bad

is there anyway of changing any of these things?

#179859

Jeff, I have to say ObjectDock is amazing and with big things to come I just can't wait!

I said before this new version didn't seem as smooth... its my stupid computer, after a reboot it is indeed smoother (even now with many apps open) :D

#179860

I've been asking for this forever (others have mentioned it too)...please give us the ability to drag and drop files to folder icons on the dock and copy/move the file to that folder (as appropriate using windows conventions - e.g. hold down the shift key while dragging moves the file)

#179913

I tried objectdock awhile back but didn't really care for it and ended up going back to Y'z dock. But I've always been one to give apps another chance so I downloaded v1.02 and gave it a shot.

I do like objectdock quite a bit now, you guys have made some very nice improvements. It feels much smoother now, and quite a bit faster.

I'm not sure if this is the place to submit a bug report, but here goes:

I've been trying to use it instead of Y'z dock today, but there is one issue thats going to keep me from switching over. I'm not sure if its just my system or not, but over the course of the day objectdock has crashed about 4 times. It always seems to do so when i'm either switching to an app using the dock (though one time it happened while I was closing an application).

I generally have a very stable system, one that I can leave on for weeks at a time without any crashes or problems. Although I do software development on this machine so that may be causing some issue. I did check the details of one of the crashes, but forgot to grab a screenshot, next time it happens i'll make sure to get the info.

I'm running Geoshell under Windows XP SP1 on a Dell Dimension 4600 (this is the machine I use at work, I'll try my home machine and see if I have any problems). Processor is a P4 2.8ghz, no hyperthreading, Geforce FX 5200, 512mb ram.

Thanks, keep up the fantastic work.

Ok i'm the trainee in Guess++ the non-programmers code ;)

How about you make the trash a running window - and fool OD into thinking it always has to show it?

either that or we can specify locations - like we can in Object bar...

[shortcut] [shortcut] | [running apps] | [trash] - would be another possible..... wouldn't it??

#180061

Yay!...thanks for OD...Works nice and smooth for me... Mr Y's is a bit sticky on my setup though likey likey too!

I do like to switch over now and then...just to give the box something to do!

Looking forward to 'the Big One'...

#180070

Oae: quick question are you using any plugins? the cpu meter one that i used to use from time to time would make the thing crash on me sometimes and eventually i figured out why, it was a bug in the plugin that would make it randomly crash from time to time. just a potential.

#180122

Does anyone from Stardock actually read these posts or should I be doing this in their forum? Cause I do have a bug thats been showing for many a version of Object Dock that is still rearing its ugly head with the latest release. Ok, by many versions I actually mean two, but you get my drift.

The Problem:

When I have the dock always visible and switch to another Virtual Desktop (using Stardock's own VWM the dock and icons disappear until I mouse over the dock, at which point the icons re-appear as does the very left and right hand sides of the dock background and nothing more. The rest of the dock will only appear after launching an app from the dock and cannot be coaxed to show up otherwise. I even tried making gentle cooing sounds. But alas.

Then clicking back to the original Virtual Window, all the icons disappear but the background remains intact until I mouse over the dock again. Weirdness. I wouldnt really say anything about it but given that I'm seeing this tragic behaviour whilst using two Stardock products I feel that something could be done to fix this minor but annoying bug...

Any takers?

Oh, and by the way, God I love this program! I dont care much for mac but I -am- an icon junkie.

Thanks Stardock folk for comin up with the goods.

#180199

The post right above yours is from Jeff of Stardock, who wrote Objectdock...so yes, they do read this forum.

#180344

I use MSDVWM from time to time (unfortunately I can't find a way to make it display on OB or in any other way than standard taskbar) and OD works well with it as long as there is at least one docklet on it, I use iCal only for that reason as my dock is completely tasks until I see something else useful enough to take up cycles. I want to test it with CoolDesk, but I've got no money, and I've never tried it with Stardock's own VWM. If thier default VWM has OD showing tasks from another desktop, I'm not interested at all...

#180346

JMB1984,

I am using the SysStats plugin, with the active drive config. Is the SysStats plugin the one you were talking about? I'll try disabling this and see if I have any problems.

Thanks.

#180399

One other bug i'm having:

When I have "My Computer" on my dock, and I click on it, it opens up my computer as it should, but then puts the "currently running" arrow under the icon. This indicator stays there even if I close the window. If I try to re-open my computer by clicking again, it does nothing. I have "if clicked, shortcut should show currently running" enabled. I'd like to keep this enabled for my other applications, but for my computer its causing this issue.

I don't know if this is because i'm running a shell other than explorer or what, but it did this with the default My Computer shortcut in the bar, and when I drag a new My Computer shortcut into the bar.

The only plugins installed now are the default ones, none of them are active on my dock.

Thanks.

#180401

@Oae, you're not alone. The running indicator for My Computer gets stuck on my Dock sometimes, too. I right click on it and choose "Open" as a workaround.

@Jeff, here are some more things for you to ponder:

Load version 1.02 and set Magnification Effect Transitions to "Very smooth but slower." Uncheck Autohide. Close and restart OD. Click on one of the icons in the running tasks section, and the magnification effect should get stuck. It doesn't happen if you use a different transition type, or if you enable then disable Autohide.

Speaking of running tasks, with this version I have to do the following: Click an icon once to select it (the window does not get the focus), click it again to minimize the window, then click it a third time to restore the window and give it the focus. I did a fresh install and rebooted, and used the default Dock settings. I hope this bug will be corrected soon.

I think the icons and labels should always be topmost when the Dock is animating, regardless of the Z-order setting. Sorry if I wasn't clear in my earlier post. It doesn't seem very useful to me to be able to launch or switch programs when the icon description is obscured by a window. When the Dock is being used, it's the most important application at that moment, so it deserves to be at the forefront. :) (The icons and text do spring to the front when the mouse pointer hits the edge of the screen, but then the focus doesn't automatically return to the previous window once the pointer leaves the Dock area.)

As for keeping the icons within the screen borders, I was thinking you could limit the magnification value, but I agree that most users would probably prefer large icons, even if they cause overflow. This was the least important of my points, anyway. Your time and talent are better spent on other features.

Command Prompt windows show up in the running tasks section with this version! Thanks for taking the time to add this in. It's very much appreciated.

To choose the location of the tasks section, below the left/right position combobox you could have a value for "Leftmost items to skip" (or "Rightmost" to match their choice). The insertion point for new task icons would be either this value (assuming a 0-based index and position=left) or the number of Dock items minus this value (if position=right). Then users could even have the running tasks appear in the middle if they wanted. What do you think?

People will really be impressed once 2.0 is released, and that enthusiasm will motivate them to get the Plus version so they can enjoy advanced features like tabs, multiple Docks, and system tray support. Keep up the great work! :D

Wow! So good to get feedback from the dude himself!!!

Good to see you around here sir. :woot:

#180425

Just updated to the latest version, and now when I click on a running task to show it, it doesn't actually bring the window to the front. If i click it again, it minimises as if the window did have focus, then I have to click it again to actually see it. It's really annoying!

Running on Win2k Pro, SP4

#180522

Quick question about ODPlus... have you decided to include it with ObjectDesktop or as a seperate purchase?

Thanks for the new release btw

#180561

An update on the crashes I was experiencing. I have disabled all docklets except for the two that came with OD, and I don't have either of them added to the dock right now. I have experienced two more crashes today, unfortunately both occurred right after another dialog box had popped up so when I hit enter to bypass the other dialog, it bypassed the error window for OD instead. I will keep using OD until I am actually able to get whatever info the error dialog contains.
