Finally I Am Fed Up With Pc...

hello everyone, don't know where to post this but i think i just want to share this with everyone.

i've been a consistent member of this forum and i am glad cos it's helped me emulated my pc to mac like i had never done before. but recently my computer crashed, just like it had never done before. i lost 80% of data on it and i was finally fed up with pc and windows.

i am ordering a 17" powerbook with 1gb ram and everything that should come with it and a wacom digital pad. well, i am a photography student who also does graphic design in london. it seems to be the right way to go, isn't it. what do you think everyone?

yeah, i've learnt the lesson and i am sure that's what i'll do from mac on. but i still haven't got a clue what crashed my computer, whether it was a virus (i had my firewall and antivirus stuff up and runnin all the damn time) or a hack or simply the harddisk stopped working after two long years. but i definitely think mac should be what i am looking at. at least it's more stable for as far as these are concerned.

btw people, do you know if mac has any viruses or does it crash a lot. i need first hand experience. thx a lot.

Macs DO get viruses - unlike what some people will have you beilve - but as long as you take the necessary precautions you'll be ok. As for the crashing - I personally find OSX to be one of the most stable OS's i've ever used (*covers ears and anticipates the linux boasts).

You can't really go wrong with a powerbook andyour right to go for the 1gig of ram - as that will be plenty for graphics/photo work.

Oh and it has a CD +/- R drive so you can BACK THINGS UP on it

yeah i agree with you doubled. what kinda precaution do you recommend for a mac to stop virus and hacks?

i think i would need that 1gig ram too, cos i hate waiting to get my 35mb pic rendered. you know, when i was doing it on a pc, i almost have to go to a meal while waiting for the render. sucks, lol~

Eat a meal? On my nice, slow, hand-me-down computer I start it before I got to sleep, and it's usually finished when I wake up (at least 10 hrs later :rant: ).

Macs can lose data just as easily as PC's (in the hardware sense). Obviously, in the OS (software sense), things are different with Unix, so i suppose from the software standpoint, there is increased stability.

But HDs, whether in a Mac or PC, can fail just like that. Don't assume an Seagate won't crash in a Mac, just b/c its IN a Mac.

An external should help you do backups--it seems a lot of Mac heads like doing the FW/external HD back up thing, so this should be a good option for you.

I can see the battery life on the 17" be a problem compared to the 15". Mac viruses usually dont do much you pretty much need to SUDO to make any systemwide changes. All maybe they do is delete your home directory. But again, backup. Fix your permissions often.

Just get Norton Firewall/Virus checker or something similar and you'll be home dry.

WOW!!, you must of had a slow PC. 35Mb is pretty small, I render pictures 60Mb+, and it doesent take more than 5 seconds using Photoshop's different effects and filters. This apply's to all my PC's, my lowest spec is AthlonXP 1800+ with 512Mb RAM, and my highest spec is AthlonXP 3000+ Barton with 512Mb RAM.

Good luck with your mac, personally I didnt like my friends G5. But I hope you'll like your Powerbook.

yeah mav451, i do kinda agree with ya, i am thinking of getting a 120gb external hd, a bit bulky but at least pretty stable and you dn't drop it around.

skyliner34, well i dont think my computer is THAT slow. it's got a p3-866 cpu with 256 ram. but it takes ages for rendering. maybe i was having too many software runnin' in the background - thx to all the aqua emulation stuff huh, lol~ well no offense guys...

n3urotic, for battery life i dont think it causes that much of a concern cos you know, i kinda treat it as my next desktop replacement in my little flat in notting hill. most of the time it'd be plugged, but i do appreciate your opinion, maybe 15" is better, but i need more screen real estate cos of my work requirement. i am getting my powerbook in a few weeks time, really excited, cant wait, guys, wish me luck

this might sound stupid but how do you remove a programme from the os? simply trash a specific folder? i haven't got my mac yet so i am just asking in case i need to perform such action

You can just trash it - but make sure you delete the prefs files too....

You mean quadruple posting . There's one on the previous page.

And yeah, 866/256 is pretty low for Photoshop work. You should double or triple the ram in that thing and it should be much better off... especially on XP. 256 MB is kinda low just for XP.

DoubleD - slight correction - Macs can get viruses, but there are currently none, at least for OS X. There were about 10 or so floating around in the System 7 - OS 9 days, but none of them work on OS X, so OS X is pretty darn safe ATM.

youngou - One nice thing I'm sure you will enjoy on the Mac is the fact that there is absolutely no spyware or adware for Macs, and Safari, the Mac's default browser, has built-in popup blocking. The Mac's Mail application, Mail.app, has what I've found to be very effective spam blocking.

Ah, the aqua stuff explains it. . These programs do take loads of recources.

hey guys thx very much for all of your opinions. currently i am waiting for my powerbook to arrive. and i am pretty damn sure that i'll get a kick out of it. as for my so-much-for-it pc, i will still use it as my file interchange system and gaming probably but i doubt i'd use it for any creative purpose, unless it's time to send it for the museum, lol~

also i'd like to know, though i've used mac before. but does it feel difficult to change completely to mac computing? i don't mean the single button mouse stuff, but the whole system and filing stuff. any idea.

It is a total breath of fresh air. You do miss a few things, but by and large you will not want to look back.
