[help] Win 2000 And Dsl

My girlfriends kid came up for the summer he has windows 2000 pro on dial up I put in a network card and at first it loaded ok brought ie up to make sure it was connected and it was then Isass.exe terminated with a status code of 128. If I unplug the connection it boots up fine with the dsl connection Isass.exe terminates, is there anyone out there that has an idea of what the problem could be?
