Winzip is shareware, but as far as i know, it doesnt have limitations at beign shareware, just a screen that pop ups a window saying its shareware, but it wont have limit in file compresion, etc. What OS you have? ME and XP have ZIP support to open, extract and create zip files.

Use the app that invented or is the major app for that compression. This means having 2-3 compression programs and associate the the format with that app. . If you have WindowsXP it has it's own zipping/unzipping program based on Winzip. For ".rar" use WinRar v3+, and for mac compression format use Stuffitexpander. For ".ace" use WinAce. For other compression formats like .tar you can associate Winzip. Don't install WinZip if you have WindowsXP since it already has it as part of the system.

Most zipping programs have shareware that expire but you can continue to use.

WinRAR will open ACE files as far as I know so the need for that flies out the window as well. Now you can go down to 2! Also, I have XP but I use Winzip cause I hate XP's

I have used WinRAR 3 since it has came out and haven't had any issues on extracting or compressing archives. My pic would be WinRAR 3 and it's really easy to use.

I use WinRAR 3 for most archiving unless I need to decompress a Mac archive in which case I use Stuffit Expander..:)

I use 7Zip. It's free and can be found over at Sourceforge . Program's pretty small and does the job very well...from my experience it uses less resources than WinRar and unzips much faster...Don't remember if it handles ACE files but it definite does zip, rar, tar, etc.
