Web (HTTP) Server: Apache: http://apache.org. Best Web server on out there. period.

That all depends what you want to do with it, and what sort of thing you're going to be running on it.

With regards to the FTP stuff, I agree.

Apache is amazing, but it's somewhat of a steep learning curve. But of course, that's not going to be a problem for anybody from Aqua-Soft!

Regarding Abyss, I myself haven't used it. It was recommended in PCWorld, so I downloaded it; I just haven't had time to install it. Do you want me to try and see if I have any luck with it?

Network ActivWebserver also looks pretty good, I haven't heard of it, though.

Hope this helps,

If you simply want to share a directory try WWWFileSharePro... It isn't very customizable tho

Apache apache apache!

I disagree though, I don't think there's much a of learning curve at all. The installer steps you through the basics, and then editing the httpd.conf is easy as cake. As long as you know some basics about the web and computers, you will be fine. Plus Apache has a HUGE installed-user base (bigger than any other webserver package out there, including Microsoft's IIS) so you only need to google for your problem and you'll find a solution out there.

Yeah Autumnist, maybe you're right. I know tons of people use Apache.

However, it sounds like MetalMusicAddict wants something really simple. I think Network ActivWebserver and Abyss fit this bill (Why do all the web servers have "A's" in them??). Ultimately, it's up to him, though!

What does Apache have to do with what he's asking?

I'm pretty sure he means specifically an FTP daemon, not some weirdo home/work file exchange program. Or if he does, that's dumb, because FTP servers aren't exactly rocket science to set up.

Windows xp already comes with an ftp server.. i dont really know how good it is but it does the job.. just go to add/remove windows apps.. and install IIS.. the ftp part.. Good luck! :)

well, for me, the best so far is serv u. i tried others, but either i'm stupid, or there is something wrong with it.but either they are slow, dosen't work properly, or it won't connect. smart ftp is not bad too. both are free.
