[help] Monitor Color, Brightness And Contrast

OK, I have been doing alot of graphic design lately (I decided to go to college for Computer Graphic Design after a year off from school). But there is a problem. The colors are off on my monitor. I don't think it's much of the hue, but the contrast and brightness. My eyes aren't trained enough to tell what is the right setting. I do have the Adobe Gamma program, but I don't know how to use it correctly. And to make it worse, I can't really post a picture of it to see what's wrong.

I set it at the defaults, but the contrast is terrible and it is very dark. So my eyes adjust to it thus making it harder to find the correct setting.

Does anybody know a good way to get it just right?

the basic rule says..., contras at 100%, brightness 50 or 75 %, on a CRT monitor, follow the wizard of Adobe gamma, set the color temp. of your monitor to 6500k if you are gonna do printing, while you are in adobe gamma, use this test patern, just open it with windows preview and let it sit there..., you want to get the color "blend"...at about 2.2 on the left...and the first bar on the right..slightly visible..., while the second bar should almost reach the 2.2 level too. You have to do it with both...adobe gamma controls.., and fine tune with the contrast, brightness controls of your monitor.., ah!!...use adobe 1998 color profile on your Adobe aplicattions.
