First of all, i haven't seen a BSOD since win2000 and then it was only when i was installing some rather exotic hardware...

The bluescreen of death is so cliched it's not even funny anymore.
Bluescreens wen't away when I upgraded to 2k\XP. Along with illegal operations.
You know what I think would be funny though? If someone on 9x somehow managed to aquafy their BSOD. Yeah I know, that's not possible. But There happens to be a program that lets you change the color of the BSOD's, magenta screen of death, heh

When Im using Windows 98, my PC is error free. When I use XP, I got a lot of BSODs. I fixed those BSODs when I run chkdsk.
Hope this BSODs are gone!

Just BTW... wanna know the easiest way to crash a mac? Plug an USB Flash disk in, drop the mac to standby (sleep), then unplug the Flash disk while in standby...
Mac wakes up, and freezes.... doesn't even reboot by itself, so you have to power cycle it

Actually it was of windows98, I have that video. His assistant was plugging in a scanner.. and he said "This must be why we aren't shipping windows 98 yet".
yea, i havent had an old school BSOD on win2000 but i have had a blue screen with a kernel error message, and it wasnt a customized ntoskrnl.exe....grrrr...
Windows XP still has BSOD, my friends bought a brand new machine and like a week after they got it his daughter was just shutting it down (and she was doing it properly) and it BSOD complaining about some weird error and that to protect thier system everything had been halted. The funny part is that thier machine just had all the latest updates on it.
And as annoying as the BSOD or Illegal Operation is, I was running Windows 2000 Advanced Server on one of my machines and there would be *zero* warning or message that an application was crashing. All you would notice is the hard disk going away like crazy. (Memory dump) and the application would just freeze and not do any screenupdates, then all of a sudden it would just disapear.
To me, that is more disheartening than getting an error message, because with an error message at least you know what's going on, but with nothing but a hard disk activity it's spooky, cause when the disk is busy you kinda get a little paranoid if something will crash. I'd rather see some sort of message than nothing.
Although there are not many machines that fully support Windows NT 4, it is quite stable and error free. I can run my NT 4 server for weeks without problems or crashes. Even when trying "untested" applications.
I still prefer my Mac for lots of things, but NT 4 still is something nice and so far Microsoft is commiting itself to the bloat concept, where thier software shows less real intelligence than before. A real operating system is UNIX and it's clones because they still work on 386 and 486 machines, little of the core engine has changed, and the user isn't always forced to load some insanely clunky, unoptimized and outdated graphics routines, but rather many UNIX systems just run as terminals with no GUI serving a great purpose. You could power an entire ISP with 486 machines and I doubt the customers would notice any difference in service if each 486 had a nice Linux/UNIX install and proper network cards.
We call it progress, but in reality we are making a bigger landfill so we can dump more garbage.
By the way, what the hell is wrong with the guy's forehead? Its yellowish.I looked it up and in danish it's called "Gulsot" it has something to do with your spleen, kidneys & liver not being able to filtrate sugars & "garbage-molekyles" rather nasty dissease actually....
I guees that's my best shot at trying to explain it....but since i'm only 2'nd semester medical-student i'm not sure!!!

Yes, I know XP\2k have a error screen (halt messages). Usually when you get them though it's because you have something misconfigured like a bad driver or something. With me it was my video card but I have the right drivers installed now to prevent it. It's kinda like the kernel panic error that you can get on *nix if you did something wrong.

i'm not saying that either windows or mac os is better, but those platforms are apples and oranges (almost literally)
The reason everything (usually) works with apple out of the box is THE BLOODY CONFIGURATIONS ARE FIXED!!!
If you go out and buy an expensive brand name PC (that usually costs about as much as an equivalent or lower perf. mac), it will work like that too...
BSODs (whose EQUIVALENT is, like someone here failed to notice, kernel dumps under various NTs) happen when people go out, poorly choose and buy very cheap made in taiwan noname components and make a haywire of driver installation (which, in the first place, were probably made out of reference drivers by an unknown someone in an unknown noname company with his/her left foot)...
It also happens when you go out and buy extra-cheap untested RAM or you put your comp together in such unorderly manner that it's components' heat dissipation is severely flawed...
So basically, it's NOT REALLY any different from Mac OSs, isn't it... you can choose between known components + stability or egzotic stuff + instability...
You can do the same thing on Macs, only with a significantly narrower range of choices...
Problems i had with my USB flash disk on an iMac (the standby thing is only the tip of the iceberg... it also had a nasty habit of force disconnecting the disk every 10 minutes) illustrate what i said nicely... and it wasn't even a noname disk but rather well known JTek's USBDrive...

PS: And just for the record, Mac's ambiguous "Error code #1321325651513151351" messages drive me equally crazy as do Windows' "no-warning" crashes...

Its true that brand-name computers will perform better, but that doesnt mean XP matches up to X. IMHO, XP earns 4.99999/5 if X is 5/5. I love both Operating systems. But I just don't like the look and feel of windows. But as an OS, it is great. **cough.. but X is better.. cough**
ONE THING: I have never had a BSOD in XP. Its those friggin Mac users who just dont wanna let go of the idea. If it has ever crashed, it has been because of 3rd party apps.
Yeah, I obviously had 3-4 BSODs a day on 98SE, but in XP ive had 2 in almost a year. Once when I was trying to hack into my own system from another computer(dont ask), so I dont blame it for crashing.
