Aqua-Soft ForumsI've always been curious as to why Mac laptops have a one button mouse. I mean, i know that you can plug USB two button mouse and be fine. Why not just change then to two button mouse? Macs are the most innovative computers, yet still use a one button mouse. I dunno, maybe it's one of the aesthetic things I don't understand.

Its because you dont really need right click on a mac as much as you do on a pc. Instead its control click, and to be honest i hardly ever need to use control click.
Tis why, two buttons has nothing to do with being advanced, in fact i would think the less buttons would make a computer more advanced so :6

I guess it is my background on WinBoxes that has given me the necessiity to tuck away the apple Pro mouse and use a logitech one..... That and my carpal tunnel syndrome 
I do use right click VREY often on the mac... specially to decompress and compress files through stuffit.

I think I used Cmd+Click.. Hmm.. Four/five times a day. I don't need it for Safari or opening stuff, or when I'm doing my work (God bless my PowerMate). So buying a mouse just for the second button would be pretty pointless for me.
And shouldn't the question really be; Why do PC Laptops have two buttons, compared to one?

I agree with the "you don't really need it" and to differentiate itself from x86 computers.

Why not have two buttons... it allows you to get more done with only one hand. How can one be better than two? Everytime you want to open a new tab in safari you have to cmd click? everytime you want to get at something you either have to long click or cmd click? I use the right click button so many times a day... Most things apple has figured out... the mouse is not one of them. It just seems silly to me just add the second button. and the scroll button! Maybe there is an easier way to scroll on macs that I dotn know about but I use the scroll wheel constantly in firefox..
oh well guess it doesnt matter since i dont own a mac!

No you don't have to press Cmd+Click, just drag the link to the Tab-bar and it automatically will open in a new tab. (Which seems a lot easier to me than Right-click, select "Open in new tab" )
Many things automatically Cmd+Click if you hold the button down for a few seconds. You don't really need a scroll-button or a second button..
Anyway you hit the nail on the head; If you're on a PC you DO need the second button. On a Mac you don't (really). People like Seph are just lazy, lazy gits. (:6 )
apple created the one mouse because after researching.. they find new computer users more easy to use a one button mouse then a two button mouse... and 2ndly, i guess most of us mac users still stick with one button mouses are because we r lazy to change it.. after using a while.. cmd+clicking stuff becomes very natural..
These are one of the resons why I switched!!!
I did not like the Mac hardware. If only third party hardware was more popular and you had more options.....Then I'll go back. MAYBE!!!!

ah yes... but i dont right click to open in new tab... middle clicking does it automatically and that is even faster than dragging to the tab bar...
It is short sighted of Apple. I use right click on my Mac all the time in Photshop and Final Cut HD. and Safari for that matter. Save image as or save target as... just due to the annoying mime type relations it messes up sometimes.
Well when I first started using my ibook, it was tough, and I did miss the right click. But I'm telling you, you dont need right click on a mac as much. It's not being stubborn, there just isnt much you need to do that entail right click. Plus cmd+click becomes second nature anyway. I imagine on a desktop system that would be kind of a pain, but on a laptop, its not that bad, because its right there.
Apparantly the real reason is that Apple took a survey and it turns out people think that the two button mouse is too confusing. Just goes to show you how stupid our country is.
It may be useful, but the Apple pro mouse is the most uncomfortable thing i've ever held in my hand.
Look at here!....Apple and its advocates claim that single-button mice are more efficient, and that multiple-button mice are confusing for novice users. The original Macintosh user interface was designed so that all functions were available to a single button mouse......
So for a no-novice user i've found these mac-mice! (white and aluminium)
How about using a one-button apple mouse on a Windows machine?
I did that before. I even wrote a program to simulate right-click using Ctrl+Click and Click-And-Hold!

you defaintely need 2 button mice.. i right click just as much on my mac as I do my windows box.
Especially in safari to open links in a new tab..

luv my 2/3/4 button mouse, no problem having to adjust to the one button mouse on macs.

I recently got a PowerBook and was worrying what to do about right-clicking and scrolling. Right-clicking is not a big deal. You can just set it in preferences to have tapping on the touchpad be left-clicking and the button to be the right-click. For scrolling on the touchpad I came across a thing called SideTrack. It works flawlessly and I couldn't do without it.

well, because if everybody thinks just a little bit, and abstracts itself from the guerrila between mac and pc, will see that a 2 button mouse is much more efficient than using two hands for the same task that you could do with just one and quicker. also is true that a human-being adapts to things and after one adapting itself to cmd+click and not to a 2-button mouse it tends to that behaviour as the natural one and refuses any other!
the bottom-line is: if one adapts to a procedure it tends to think that anything else that could be better is not!!! so, com'on, a 2-button mouse, after getting used to it, is a 100 times more productive than cmd+click and apple got wrong this time!!!
don't misunderstand me, apple got fantastic things and usability improvements but cmd+click isn't one of them!

I couldn't live without my 4-button + scrollwheel mouse on my desktop. The more I can do by pushing buttons in my hands rather than pointing and clicking at a link or a button on the screen, I'm just that much more productive. It's not that big of a deal on my PC laptop to only have two buttons, but I don't know how I used to manage with a two button mouse on my desktop PC. I will definitely be using a different mouse when my Mac gets here. Plus I get carpal tunnel just by looking at that damn thing.
