I really hope you meant "which is better? (Panther with or without Darwin)", in which case the answer would be without ('cause it saves time and HD space). ![]()

Yeah, I want to see you install Panther without Darwin.
(was this subtle humor I'm not getting?)
Er
Check this guide:
http://www.emaculation.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=1102
We mean panther w/o darwin installed on XP, seperately from OSX install.

You don't need Darwin to install Panther or any other versions of OS X on PearPC.
Never mind i am getting panther
I think he wanted to know which is better, Darwin or Panther, give him a straight answer ![]()
OK, I think too many people are getting confused.
To install OSX an a PearPC image HD you DO need Darwin, I have tried a fresh HD and it didnt work then I used Darwin and it works. The only reason some tutorials say you need Darwin is that they come with a pre-formatted images which has been done with Darwin. So it does need Darwin but you dont ONLY! if you get a pre-formatted image!
IMO most of the pre-formatted images are no good loads of them dont even boot but most have been partitioned wrong I hear people suggesting swapping the partitions but if Darwin is used correctly you dont need to do anything as the Apple partition will be the ONLY partition and will use all the available space.
The HDs on PearPC.net come Pre-Formatted now I dont know if they are any good but the official tutorial is what I followed so they should be but the 'PearPC Control Panel' can make a blank image of any size on a Windows PC

Don't look at me, that's what they told us
i meant which is better having panther alone or having it with darwin?
as in does darwin give u something extra because if it doesnt whats the point

No it doesn't give you anything extra. Plus it'll save you an extra 4+ hours. Just use one of the guides that provide a proper pre-formatted disk image. Seriously, I was up and running in 5 hours (from download of the pearpc exe to opening up TextEdit in OS X on my Windows install).
@autumist - how was the speed on ur specs if i may ask?
You do not strike me as a tag 1.1 compliant member Tuxedo. I have had to tag more than 4 threads of yours, This one included. Please tag your threads.

Darwin is the core of OSX.
Panther (OSX) == Darwin + Pretty GUI
hence, you need Darwin. ![]()
My geeky side just laughed when someone said they wanted OSX without Darwin.
oh i c so u CAN have panther without darwin but it looks like ****

No, you can not have a GUI without a core.
That's like having a car frame without an engine. ![]()
You can have Darwin w/o Aqua, but you can't have Aqua w/o Darwin (or some core).
Ok were getting confused here Darwin is the core of OSX and basically what its built on if you install OSX your installing some Darwin there matey ![]()
@ Autumnmist thee installation of Darwin takes 4 hours were not installing it here. WHat you need to do is get a HD if its pre-formatted then just keep your fingers crossed the creator didnt mess it up like many seem to. WIth a pre-formmated image darwin has already been used on the drive and therefore YOU will not need it
but if you take my way which IMO is better as you know whats going on with the drive then you will need to PARTITION with Darwin you DONT install Darwin at ANY point if you install Darwin you'll only get the command line UNIX core of OSX. YOu need to Partition the HD with Darwin just like you do when you install Windows. If you install Darwin you wont be able to install OSX. Once you have partitioned with Darwin you can install OSX hassle-free.

I have 512 MB of RAM, 2.4 Ghz P-4 M.
PearPC is usable, though slowish. As I said, my install procedure took 4 hours for Panther disc 1. I suggest you check out the PearPC forums on emaculation.com -- there are a lot more users with more experience there than in this thread on Aqua-Soft.

I know that. That's my point! *I* didn't have to deal with Darwin because I just downloaded the preformatted image (which many other people have used), followed the guide, and I never had to mess with Darwin. I am suggesting that other people do the same because it's faster and simpler.
Go find the OS X in 13 steps or whatever guide on emaculation.com, download the disk image provided in that thread, follow the guide. You can't go wrong.

Yeah I know I understand but Im saying Partitioning a blank HD with Darwin take about 5 minutes at the most and IMO is better that way. At the end of the day its up to the user which route he chooses I'm just sayin that I prefer the Darwin way ![]()
@nillinu
*Without getting involved in the general conversation*
Darwin is built into Mac OSX so you don't need to install it separately, by installing OSX you automatically install Darwin, alternatively you can download and install Darwin separately but you won't really get any form of gui (at least not what I presume you're looking for), you'll get a 'command prompt' sorta thingie..
I used the attached 3gb pre-formatted image in the following way:
btw, you can open the attached file (which is currently 7kb but will expand to a full 3gb file) using winrar.
Hope this helps ![]()
Ok, for the people who still look like this:

Think of Darwin as MS-DOS and the Mac OS X GUI as Windows.
