Bit Rates And You

I am involved in a debate right now and this question is at the core of the arguement. Can people tell the difference between a 128 bit and a 192 bit encoded MP3 file?

I feel that this community has a wide range of music listeners, from the occaional, to the constantly.

I will not give my opinion in fear that I may sway the outcome, unwillingly. Once this poll is complete, I will tell you why I am doing this.

Please, only response if you have constructive critisism.

Thank you.

I am not an Audiophile, yet I can easily spot the difference. The inferior sounds like it has a "paper bag" over it, cymbals sound especially bad...

My 2 cents.

edit

For my personal music I like LAME --alt-preset-standard or whatever, that sounds the same as lossless to me.

I find my prefrence falls more towards .ogg.

You have to be hard-of-hearing to not notice 128 sounds worse than 192. I can easily tell difference from 160 to 192.

Yeah....128 sounds like it is coming from underwater or something. I dont know about real cymbals since I dont listen to music with cymbals in it but I do know about the bleeps, blips, scratches booms and bangs of electronic and instumental music.

I can bearlly tell the diference but on some songs it's noticable.

Great poll by the way! ;)

I always wanted to know what others think on this topic. :D

I do notice it since I'm using headphones

Umm... I'm using 128kbps since it uses the less space and sounds at least moderately tolerable. For some songs, the differences do stand out but for the most part, I think 128kbps is okay.

I wish I had an iPod for my music collection so that I could rip my CDs at 320kbps. My CD/MP3 Discman just can't cut it.

well... I listen on a daily basis.. and its very obvious of the sounds between the different bitrates... for the most part... usually 192 or higher just sounds alot clearer than the normal 128 or even 160... like they say... 192 is the closest to CD quality

I'm not much of an Audiophile, and I honestly can't tell the difference. Of course, I know what 192 should sound better, but my speakers are so old I can't really tell the difference on them. >.

They really sound different when you are listening through Genelec Studio Monitors. :6
