[question]

Greetings;

I do hope this is the right place to place this topic...

I have a first generation TiBook G4 550 that I used for work purposes. I use my PC mainly for everything though.

I haven't upgraded my TiBook past 10.1. Would Panther be worth upgrading to (well yes for PearPC it would on my PC)? More specifically, I want to know if Panther was a signiificant speed upgrade to previous versions.

I Haven't been using my Mac since I relocated, but all the hype about Panther makes me more inclined to upgrade the OS. Plus, I can't run some apps on it (including Safari).

I think that's one of the most disappointing aspects of OS X. upgrades are all too often, and some programs seem obsolete within a year.

Thanks in advance :)

EDIT: I do apologize for not giving this the appropriate title... I'm not used to the tags and inadvertantly forgot to type in the subject with the tag :(

Panther is a huge speed and response update (especially from 10.1). Update now.

(Or face Ear-Ninja wrath!)

Thank you very much for responding... I was beginning to think that no one really knew... Thanks for your reply!

I will definitely upgrade.

Yeah, I'm using panther on a 400MHz iMac and while you don't get the quartz extreme stuff, it's still pretty snappy.

I think you'll find a nice speed boost, most significantly bootup time, as compared to jaguar.

What is Puma? Is that 10.0 or something?

Er each point release has it's own cat name.. -_-

10.0 - Cheetah

10.1 - Puma

10.2 - Jaguar

10.3 - Panther

10.4 - Tiger

In fact many updates to each point release have additional "hidden" names, but I can't be bothered to remember them.

I am SO thrilled; I just upgraded my TiBook, and not only does Panther improve the look of Aqua, but it really is a good performance boost... my TiBook feels much faster and responsive now!

Thanks everyone :)

wooHOOOO!

It's strange comparing the interface to pre-Panther Os's because they've really refined it... looks so much more 'yummy' than before... I was beginning to hate the 'Aqua' stripes... text is much nicer looking, AND Safari has got to be one of THE fastest browsers I've ever used and displays some pages even better than Firefox! :woot:

Thanks again... I just wish I could attach some screenies, but I'll do that somewhere else :)
