Aqua-Soft ForumsIm hoping someone can help me with this, im running win XP Pro SP1, and when i hit ctrl+alt+delete the task manager pops up and goes away within a very small fraction of a second, the icon sits in the sys tray until i mouse over it and it disapears. i also seem to have this problem with the registry editor, it does the same thing, pops up and goes away >.

I don't think it's a virus. This has happened to me before/while my computer is crashing. However, it might be. Scan the Windows folder for viruses and/or spyware. See if replacing Taskman.exe and/or regedit.exe will help you (There's prob. a backup on your Windows XP CD, or if you're using Flyakite's SP1, there might be one in Windows\Backup).
Try hitting Ctrl+Shift+Esc; see if that brings the Task Manager up.
If the problem just started happening, see if you have a recent restore point. Also, try booting Windows into Safe Mode and see if Taskmanager will start up.
See if any of the above helps you; also, search online for others having the same problem.

lol you know what mine does the same thing - i just checked it and both taskmanager and regedit are the same .. they pop up and vanish - gonna goto windows update - update and see if still does it because it was find the other day before i replaced some system files with stefankas replacements again.
update - nothing to do with anything i wrote here before -
just ran ad aware and bazooka and checked my AVG logs that ran at 6am this morning = No virus / No Trojan etc etc - just scanned my registry with tuneup utilities nothing reported in there either ! so im lost plus ran windows update and rebooted still does it . oh well no big deal as of yet i guess just have to look into it further
Ok- I didn't want to edit my above post because I wanted to make sure people saw this. It's taskmgr.exe which is the Task Manager, not taskman.exe. Two completely different apps. Sorry.
well mine is fixed - not sure how but i did some searching found some info relating to Yaha ( Virus ) something to do with mass mailing virus that actually shuts down your virus checker / scanner when it hits your system - the symptoms sounded like our issue - ( taskmanager and regedit loading and then vanishing ) so i downloaded the fixyaha com file from the symantec site - did a search on their site - turned off windows restore option so that it couldnt restore back to my system.
shut down and restarted in safe mode ran the fixyaha.com file and yeah that is the name of the file ..
restarted my pc - ( even though after the util ran it said no yaha virus found on system - ) went to run my taskmanager it worked and so did regedit ! .. sheshhhhh so im not sure what fixed what here lol
oh and by the way - loading up into safe mode ( before running the util ) did allow me to ctrl - alt - delete and get up taskmanager ... but like i said the symantec util said nothing found ??? strange i know but hey i cant complain cos its working 100% now..
What antivirus program do you have? Is it Norton Antivirus?
If it is, norton sucks. I had it and my computer always acted funny a lot. Just recently it starting crashing completely and I kept running virus scans with norton antivirus. I have a paid up subscription and I ran live update. It never found anything.
Because I was so convinced I had a virus, I uninstalled norton and got Avast! antivirus (an awesome, completely free, skinnable antivirus program). You have the option to run a boot time scan (scan in console mode before anything is loaded). The boot time scan is very important because processes from the virus are unable to interrupt the antivirus program. I know it seems like a free antivirus program wouldn't be good but trust me, I have been running it for a while now and my computer runs like brand new.
If it still doesn't work after that:
1. Put your Windows XP disk in the cdrom drive
2. Click on the run command in the start menu
3. Type in: sfc /scannow and press Ok
A dialog will appear indicating that windows is checking the integrity of your system files. While this process is running, and files that are corrupted will be replaced by new ones from the installation disk
Never had any problems with Norton...
ive seen this problem numerous times. the solution is always to restart in safe mode. navigate to the various startup keys and delete anything that dosnt look right.
