Hello!
I was wondering what is the most common way to find and start an application in OSX.
There is the dock of course, but it can't hold every application in your computer.
AFAIK, the Apple menu only hosts the most frequently (or recently?) used apps.
What other ways are used to start a program on a Mac?

Well, usualy i just open the finder, klick on the apps icon and then om the program in question...
Pretty much teh way it works in windows, find the exe and click it.

I personally use fruitmenu, it is an a haxie from unsanity though which you can have the full list of apps on the apple menu as well as on any place you right click. It is shareware though...
Use LaunchBar (macupdate.com)
You just have to like type the program's abbreviationg, 'IE' or u can type the first couple of letters, like "fir" for firefox, or "irc" for some IRC program.
It keeps index of almost all the apps/music/pictures/bookmarks, what not on your mac.

A cheaper way to do it than fruitmenu is to drag your Applications folder to the dock and right-click it whenever you need to open an application. Fast/cheap.
Tigermenu is a freeware, super-straightforward, super-light-on-resources menubar app that when clicked displays all programs (regardless of subfolder) available in your Applications folder. It's basically the same as having the Apps folder in your dock and right-clicking, but you can choose which folders are displayed instead of scrolling through a list of *every* program in there. Also it puts the cool large feline paw-print in your menubar 
I have that plus my Apps, Docs, Pics and Music folder in the right side of the dock, just a right-click away, like Johnny5 said.

Quicksilver do the same and its free. As Launchbar is a very useful app to launch apps very quickly.

Non-Regulars: Double-Click my Jojious HDD icon, open Applications folder, open App.
I don't really like the whole "Launchers" idea, personally I'd rather just do one of the above. But TigerLaunch (Not TigerMenu Ji ) seems really handy..

I super agree, all the Apps I use but not enough to shove on my Dock I've got in my list..

i have a HD icon (of course), a home icon, and an applications folder icon on my desktop, and i also use launchbar.
So, without any third-party tools, there isn't a fast way to access all your apps like with the Windows Start menu?
Yes, you just drag your applications folder to the right side of the dock and when you want to open an app from there, just right-click the dock icon, just like Y'z. Here's my dock, for example... on the right side, all apps, docs, pics, albums, etc... just a right-click away.

yes, the applications folder, my imac has a wide screen, so i dont maximise the windows, that way i have easy acces to my 3 folders on the desktop, and also all you have to do is open up any finder window (for instance through the dock) and use the side bar to navigate to your apps folder.
