This is along the same line; does anybody know how to enable the side pane preview for audio and video files? You can do it in 2K Pro but I cannot find it in XP. For those of you who don't know, it is like how it shows the picture or web pages (when you have Web-View enabled), but instead of a picture, it uses the Media Player controls so you can play the audio file and you can preview a video file.

If you toggle away the folder pane on the left, it becomes
exactly what you are looking for.
Edit:
If I recall my last Linux installation correctly,
KDE or Gnome does not play on mouseover but display a tooltip
with ID3 tag info like artist, album, song name and artwork.
Cool feature to have, must be implemented as a so called
Shell extension, maybe just google for "mp3 shell extension"?
