I'm not talking about running in classic mode for applications. I'm talking about booting into OS9 and using it.

to PLATINUM-soft note: true... wouldn't that disallow anything like, Paper and Plastic since it's not technically aqua? Maybe this place should be called Cocoa soft or something.
I think Contra was joking, but if you manage to boot into Platinum, I wouldn't mind taking it round the block. Post your success (if you have any).
Er just use a theme. That's a lot easier than stepping back to pre-Aqua. There are a good couple of really nice "retro" OS themes available. Go lookie at MacThemes.net. 
You should be able to load and boot to OS 9.2.2 on your iBook.
Mine came loaded with OS 9 only when I bought it, but then it is only a G3 so...
If you just want the OS 9 look, then there's a choice of three similar looks;
• Gershwix (More a "smooth"ed up Platinum)
• Rhapsodized (Very usable from personal experience)
It's really rather daft to step backwards just for a look, especially when it's easily done with ShapeShifter and a GUIKit.. 
Im in OS 9 right now... I like it... Its good... resonsive and all around a good easy fast OS!
I like Rhapsodized.
But i'm a fan of the old mac icons with no alpha trans, all pixel and small things like that.
However, it's worth remembering that newer macs can not boot into OS9 directly. It's been disabled in the firmware so you have to use classic or an old style theme. This was done to encourage the uptake of OSX. I think the earliest mac this affects is somewhere mid G4 quicksilver product life. Before that, you can dual boot 9/X

Been playing with OS9 in Classic environment. So.... is Apple doing it like VMware on windows essentially?
I really don't see the point of this post, just throw the OS 9 cd-roms in you drive and see if it boots from it....

When you use the OS resposibly... I have never EVER seen an App crash on OS9. I have seen apps crash in 8.6 and 10.x. BUT never ever in OS 9.
Ive been running Office 2001 and PS 7, together and simotainiously(sp?).

Didn't you just post that useless comment to raise your post count?
I've also never had an app crash on me in 8.6/9. I was using them on these performa machines, at times it would become extremely slow and unresponsive but they always unfroze in the end.
Cro-magnon Rally was fun that came with those OS9 macs.

What do you do with it? It has the worste memory management out there... someone explained it to me once, but I forgot. Oh well. They have OS9 on campus and it's the worste OS I've ever used.

Nope not really I don't care much about my post count here, but you can take OS 9 for a test drive and if you don't like it just drag the system folder to the trash. Isn't that easier than hear 1,000 different opinions from everyone. It's not like you're Mac will self-destruct when you're installing OS 9. 
Just install it and see if it fits your needs or not.

Which implies that you may care about it somewhere else, which is, to say the least, distressing.
As already said; New Macs (as of 2003, wasn't it?) can NOT boot into OS9. Can't. The end.
If you want to run an old OS like that so badly just buy an old $150 Mac with it. <_<
Otherwise: Use a theme. It's hardly a debate. Use theme or buy old OS9 booting Mac.
