[release] Fontselector 0.3!

Hey everyone,

I originally made this app for myself, to use with Paintshop pro to quickly find fonts and the like, but I thought someone here may like it, so here it is :)

Download here (0.33)

Mirror

(To run, unzip the file, then click the FontSelector.exe)

Has a pretty easy to use, but flexible working environment. As an alpha one main feature is missing, the collection things, like the books of fonts. Thats coming soon.

Enjoy! If anyone uses this, could you please reply, so I can see if this was worthwhile :)

Hell Yes!

Don't add to many featuers cause then It'll slow it down. It's perfect like this. WebDevelopers would Fein for this. It loads the fonts man fast! Perfect for me!

Very nice, I like it. Speedy, no bugs (so far) and it looks nice too. Keep it up ^_^

Quick question: what is that Visual Style you're using in the screenshot, and where can I get it? Thanks!

#166426

looks like the link is dead - anyone want to mirror?

#166513

This is just great, light-weight and it shows all of my fonts.

#166574

i just have a question... how is it sorting the font on startup... i don't see the pattern it's using. should it not just sort them alphabetically?

#166578

Awesome work alilm, like always thanks a lot.

Very nice indeed alilm, worth registering here just to post to say so :-)

my immediate impression: nice crisp display, support of TTF/OTF hinting and of Type 1 fonts sets it immediately above a lot of the other font viewers. Nice and QUICK. Mini-mode is an excellent idea.

Features? I'm kind of torn - On the one hand more bloat, less speed. On the other hand there are very few really good font viewer-managers out there (in the PC-world).

In short: I love it from the moment go. Thank you!

Couple of minor things I noticed:

- BTW wookietv, the main window can sort alphabetically if you click on the column heading. The mini-window is non-alphabetic, though.

- You can manually set the size per keyboard in the main window, but it won't do the same from the mini-window, although.

Biggest wishes (can't resist it, sorry):

- Possibility to set one's own text string

- Possibility to clone window-instance for the purposes of comparing fonts.

- Ability to display non-installed fonts (maybe most difficult and biggest speed-killer)

- Collections idea sounds like a good idea too (I guess then you could also then choose to exclude some of those system or program-dependent fonts from the list, which appear but you don't really need to compare)

A few minor new features:

First one;

-Temp Favourites Fonts list.

Means while the app stays open you can have a little scrap book of favourite fonts, or fonts your going to use in a project, without forgetting them etc...

Add fonts to the favourites list, simply by dragging them from the main window to the smaller one

-Smart search

Had actually been implemented in 0.311 but now improved in 0.33, start typing the name of a font and FontSelector will guess and then select the font you are searching for.

Thanks for all your comments so far :D

Hi alilm,

that was quick :-)

Can you check your archive please. I get a broken archive message with the zip file. (can't repair it either). I couldn't get the screenshot either I saw in your first post.

cheers

should be fixed now :)

Hi alilm,

yep, archive is fine now, pic there too. Thanks for the quick fix!

A first bit of feedback from a quick test - hope it helps:

The 'jump-to' name feature works fine, though you have to type pretty fast to get more than one character. However, I can't use the arrow keys anymore to step through the fonts anymore, it reverts to the beginning of the list. It'd be nice to see the arrow keys wrok with the 'jump-to' feature - very practical for large fonts with many different weights: jump to particular font name, arrow down to appropriate weight.

The favourites list drag'n'drop works great too. At the moment, it's a bit like an electronic yellow post-it. It records the list of font names, but I can't display the font previews from the favourites list. I'm not sure if you plan to do that.

I can rearrange the list though per drag and drop (kinda happened by accident i.e. drag and drop from favourites to favourites window). There's a little cosmetic aspect there too: the font counter is incremented and stripes are added.

That's all I've noticed for now. Still quite wowed by it :-) I thought of yet another 'li'le feature idea' - it'd be nice if it remembered window position but I can hold my breath on that one :-)

hope that helps you a little too.
