Titlebar Buttons (in Kol's Vs)

I have seen people say they think that the buttons in Kol's VS look bad. And people give him the blame\credit for making them.

However what everyone neglects to remember is that those buttons where ported (copied and pasted) from Max Rudberg's Aqua themes. He is the one responsible for their look. They are supposed to look higher contrast and flatter just like the jaguar\panther buttons are compared to the 10.1 ones. Max Rudberg is a respected Mac themer and no one has said bad things about his titlebar buttons, however when someone ports them to windows people bash them and the porter gets the blame, that's not right.

I think they look good myself. But I know that some people might not like them. However, I think people should take it a bit easy on the skin developers and give credit where credit is due. They put a lot of work in the skins they make out of the sheer enjoyment and no one pays them.

Ok, that's all. I just wanted to set things straight about smooth stripes' titlebar buttons. You may now return to your regular scheduled program. ;)

I think it seems reasonable to blame the people that make 1:1 ports for anything that the user isnt 100% happy with. :canadian:

I dunno... if it's a 1:1 port, then surely its down to the original theme? More to the point, though, why do users get the right to criticise at all unless they are asked? I don't know about anyone else, but I work on things that I like the look of. If other people disagree with my choices, thets up to them, but unless I ask for opinions I wouldn't change anything cause some people dont like it...

In the end though, I agree with Smoke (Nice to see you posting here again, by the way...) If people don't like something, it's not Kol's fault...

Yes, Smoke, you are right and that is why the thread stating that kol's buttons were fugly was trashed.

We accept constructive criticism here, but "kol, your glyphs are fugly"is not considered constructive here or in the antartica.

And what's up with this whole 1:1 thing anyway? Because of OS (and it's not just a windows thing) differences things wouldn't really be like that. For example, the pill on the right doesn't roll up a window in OSX and it doesn't appear on all windows. What it really does is hide the toolbars in a window in windows that have them. The bubbles in the scrollbar stay still as you scroll the bar. There are 2 kinds of combo boxes\list boxes one with double arrows and one with a single arrow pointing down which fits ours better yet people insist on trying to force them to look like list boxes in OSX, and more. Visibility options on the titlebar buttons are also a big one and also a state for when the window has unsaved changes. Yet you don't see me going around getting in their faces because I know they are doing their best. If they don't get it now in time they might because whether you know it or not a good themer always does at least a little work on their themes.

But they can be pretty dam close that a person wouldn't care. It's almost like doing a version of a painting in a different medium. A person can do it very close to the original but it's not "1:1". In fact, I'm against that for describing things you won't ever see me say that when I release something no matter how close it is.

However, I think maybe a person should make it clear what they are porting and show a link to the original so the people can see why they chose to do things the way they did. Like for example, "This is a port of Max Rudberg's smooth stripes theme, he made the buttons flatter and more jaguarish so therefore so does this theme have those elements". It's not the porters job to change how things look from the original radically, it's their job to get the look and feel of the original as close as they can.

As a matter of fact, i dont see why its so important. Many people are like "ohhh the titlebar glyphs are 23 pix aparts isntead of 24" or soemthign gay like that. What does it matter, if it looks good use it. What kills me even more is when people complain that visual style glyphs are off. There not even on the right side/order for gods sake. You want true realism, dont use visual styles.

As a OS X user myself i am amazed at how my preconceptions regarding certain functions of theme widgets in OS X themes function differently (i mean radically different) then some OS X Windows ports. Like the aforementioned pill by Smoke until I started using OS X i thought it was to roll up windows i did'nt know it was to hide toolbar buttons in certain windows. Actually thats not entirely true Smoke showed me when using his wb4 themes which in my opinion now that i am on OS X are the closest to OS X themes for windows i ever used.

I MUST state here and now that while using Windows XP before i bought my MAC i was astonished and down right amazed at the work of the themers community such as Kol Smoke Peteross Crni bubbelbyte etc etc. Mostly not only at the cool themes and that but the fact that they did it without asking for recompense and without payment after all "A workman is worthy of his hire" I would not of known how to theme myself it aint my niche. I am just glad i had the chance and BTW using those themes led me to go out and buy a MAC of my own so........

"HERE'S TO ALL THE THEMERS, GOOD JOB AND THANKS"

I wouldn't mind if KoL didn't make his themes 1:1 as long as they look as good as the originals. But when Max's buttons are ported, they look very unusual on my screen. I don't notice it as much on my mom's PC but I'm using a higher resolution and my screen is LCD (her's is CRT) and his buttons look really cruddy.

This is more likely to do with the setup of your system, or your monitor's pixel shape...
