I recomend Yellow Dog, Its very easy it install and It's RedHat and RPM based.... Very good as a stand alone distro too.
SO how would I have it on my Mac though would I completely erase Panther or what do I do.
you would partition your HDD I think.
You will have to partition your HD.
Assuming your going ot install Linux PPC and NOT run Mac On Linux.... Heers what I would do.
1. Back up... Documents and everything you need..
2. Download the distro and burn the cds
3. Boot from the Mac OS X CD 1 and Make 2 Partitions... 1 for Mac OS X, I suggest labling it. And leave the other as unpartitioned space. I suggest spliting the drive it half to leave ample room for Linux and other Apps you want to install
4. After that, Quit the installed and insert the Linux disc 1 in the internal CD drive.
5. Reboot and hold down the "c" key until you see the boot prompt

6. Pressing ENTER will probably take you to the installation screen. Unless noted by other documentation on the screen, just press enter.
7. When partitioning the drive, Partition the un-partitioned space with 2 new partitions...
Your partition table MIGHT look like this
hda1 (Mac OS X) %sizehere%
hda2 (Swap) (I reccomend 1GB here)
hda3 (Main) (rest of the size of the HD)
Please be careful! You can't cause perminant damage, but, you weont get the hours of time back that you might waist.
8. Continue and read all directions carefully! Watch the progress.
9. Your new distro will probably install a boot loader giving you the opportunity to select what Partition you want to boot.
Dive right in.... Dont be scared of editing a script or two and dont be scared of the command syntax.
I reccomend YellowDog Linux because it will recognize most/all your hardware so you wont have to configure X right away.
I wouldn't use Yellowdog. It's horribly out of date (read: Redhat 9 based) and has a bunch of bugs.
Basically, Yellowdog is used in scientific computing, running single purpose workstations, etc. It's meant to run some specific app. It's not good AT ALL for desktop usage (simply too out of date/buggy).
The two distros with the best PPC support are Gentoo and Debian. Unfortunately, both are more difficult to install than Yellowdog. I would suggest Debian, as it's binary based rather than source (much quicker to use, no compiling), and it's a little easier to install.
At gooeylinux.org, we have a few PPC Linux users, so they might be able to help you more (I've never installed linux onto PPC).
Hello there. I am having trouble installing the Mandrake 9.1 PPC Linux on my eMac. THis is just to start I will get a more up to date Linux distro later.
THe specs of my eMac are:
eMac
1ghz
256 mb ram
airport extreme
superdrive
80 gig hd
so i used disk utility to partition and i set aside 16 gb for Linux.
when i am installing first off wen i want a graphical installation i get a black screen and nothing happens...fine i use the text install and that works fine.
When i select my partition i wish to install to it says missing filesystem. What step do I take from here to install Linux and if I have to, create a filesystem
