Windows Codename: Longhorn

I know every one has heard about the future release of windows codename:longhorn.

If you have noticed screenshots and new data posted on the new operating system, you would also know that they have begun to make windows more simple and cleaned up the GUI.

The question is what do you think of the project and the new design of windows as we see it now...

In earlier screen shots, we saw more blue like windows XP, now they have completely changed the look, colors, and feel of the OS. and moved the release date to 2005. Testers have begun using the software world wide, and it's now leaked onto the internet.

Many people believe that the leak onto the internet didn't happen by axadent! Inside information states microsoft leaked a release of longhorn onto the internet, to build hyph and get people talking about microsoft products. Also to build excitment.

There is much to be said about microsoft windows codename: longhorn. What's your news, report, and feelings on it?

Will you still modd your PC after longhorn?

Do you think you will still be able to modd your pc after longhorn?

What does the future hold for us skinners, themers, and app builders?

I do not believe that the leak was on "axadent"!

Otherwise, I don't really care what happens as of right now.

It's too early for me to comment on skinning.

when we all have a pc with dual-core CPU running at 4 to 6GHz; a minimum of 2 gigs of RAM; up to a terabyte of storage; a 1 Gbit, built-in, Ethernet-wired port and an 802.11g wireless link; and a graphics processor that runs three times faster than those on the market today. Then we will be able to skin it meanwhile... its just alpha people.

I will continue modding even with Longhorn. Also, I do not beleive it will be anything special and the visuals aren't better than that of OS X. I may have some more to say after 10.4 is revealed

Seph just said it, but I'll say it a bit more:

It's an alpha

In other words, the visuals that you see in Longhorn are likely completely unrelated to what we'll see when Longhorn RTMs. Also, Lab 6 (the Avalon lab) code hasn't been released to the public in any of the leaked builds, so we can't really comment on the visuals of Longhorn in any form.

What I do know, though, is that the APIs for the "pillars" of Longhorn are really well designed.

I don't doubt that modding will continue in Longhorn and beyond.

Furthermore, it's an alpha.

Lather, rinse, and repeat.

Some of us (MSDN members who have legal copies of Longhorn PDC build) know what the underlying structure's going to be like (from a coder's perspective), but no-one outside of Microsoft really knows anything that people here care about...

that pics are from an 'old' build... There is a 'new' build where you can see more details how will be the next version of w$. There is a "feature" called DCE, now renamed to DWM where you can see some 3d effects an (sh*t?) like that but everything seem to be a kind of plan (because the new OS will req a lot of hardware) where everyones updates their system to trusted hardware... Basically you will do the same that you do now but 'legally' (you know what I mean <_< )

well, i gotta say i like the slate look so far. i find it very comfortable. can't say much about the jade look, tho. BUT the glass look (not available, so it seems) is really getting me on. furthermore, i like the current stuff being showcased for it (the window anims, the alt+tab thing, shadows, window transparency).

on the side of the new productivity stuff in LH, i'd have to say that the WinFS part is reeeeeeally hyping me up. and the Indigo (communication/networking components) seems to be very interesting too

i can't wait to see this done. i'm really hyped up.

Longhorn 4074 was released at a microsoft confrence to testers, I think the slate look is sticking, they had many diffrent varations of the blue look back from 4001 - 40015, and this theme has been around from 4051 - 4074, that's a big jump, to be sticking with one theme.

altho in the developers section of microsoft.com they say they are going to release multiple themes with longhorn, to give the world more choices, so that's one of the reason they are changing up the themes, build one perfect it, and move on to the next one. They even included classic, and xp themes into the builds, for those who can't let go of the old and move onto the new.

in a better enlightment, MAC OSX has it's own secrets of a new OS being built. their attempts to try to compete with microsoft's longhorn release in the future.

Lindows, now linspire > has come along way from just a simple beefed up version of windows running with unix / linux systems. taking on a shape of it's own, and slowly an image of it's own. It also has microsoft beat when it comes to price, and afordability. PreInstalled on PCS that are equil to any windows machine, at a much lower price. I say we may have race going on here between the three!

by the time microsoft releases is WindowsPE witch is kinda like when they released windows me, it got us use to the new before the release of xp.

in this case it's getting us ready for windows longhorn. With features of longhorn, but the ease of XP.

@zandor, WindowsPE? WinPE is the Windows Pre-install Environment. it's the setup part of longhorn. it's nothing like WinME. If you mean Windows XP Update (how they're referring to the WinXP Second Release - or WinXP Reloaded, if you prefer), i guess that'll be a quite reasonable release, since Longhorn final is quite far away

a Google search on www.winsupersite.com brought up the following article, tho:

on a direct quote: "In Longhorn, the first phase of setup simply copies this single image file--referred to as the WinPE (Windows pre-installation environment)--to the hard drive, and then reboots the system."

and besides, paul thurrot is not part of the Longhorn dev team. he's just an insider.

OMG, I don't believe those requirements...

that's gonna cause every one to have to get a new pc, maybe that's what they want, and have planned! to extract more money out of the market, just get every one to buy a new pc. That kinda falls into their plans of trying to get every one to have multiple pcs at home. This is turning into one big corprate plan to boost sales....

But that's if the computer market even has those things by the time it's released... they are putting their money and resources on something that may not be possible... or just setting limits high to get every one worried... who knows

It never ran on, in, under, over, on top of Windows ever.

I have a copy of this pile of goo and I'm glad I didn't pay for it.

It's the single biggest POS version of Linux I ever had the displeasure of loading.

When it actualy loads of course.

I stand corrected on the Windows vs. windows statement.

Learn how to form a cohernt sentance to avoid said confusion in the future.

Lindows was never a beefed up version of anything and never will be.

It uses a very hacked up version of KDE for it's UI and it will never come close to being able to perform the "operations of MACOSX", which by the way is properly typed out as MacOS X.

And no... there was nothing wrong with the PC that I installed Lindows on.

Lindows lacks drivers for some very common off the shelf ATI video cards and could not load the UI.

Which is the only reason why Linux in general has some issues with the common user. DRIVERS.

As for stability of Linux... depends on who compiled the kernal.

Boxed versions of Linux are bloated just like Windows as they have to anticipate every possible hardware configuration they might be installed on.

Linux is also notorious for lacking certain runtime libraries in pre-compiled builds.

Linux also does not posses some hardware drivers that are readily available for Windows operating systems which limits what type of harware it can be installed.

And when was the last time anyone has seen a BSOD on a Windows XP box.

And talk about stable...

Even with the many customizations that have been installed from this community, I have yet to crash my PC.

BTW... I run MacOS 9, MacOS X, Be OS 5 Pro, Windows XP Pro, Windows Server 2003 Enterprise and a host of experimentle operating systems including Longhorn.

All of which are legaly purchased or aquired and licensed.

One last thing...

As I have stated in another post, opinions are like a$$holes.

Just show some respect and consideration to the other readers of this board and behave like an adult.

I'm assuming you are not and adult yet based on your lack of respect for others and the general tone of your posts.
