Do You Have A LCD Or Tube Monitor?

There are those of us out there that are still using old tube monitors, (the big box screen monitors that look like TVs) and I think most of us have upgraded to LCD technology by now.

This poll is to take account on how affordable and popular LCD technology is, so please anwser the question truthfuly.

you surely enjoy making polls and asking questions, dont you?

19'' LCD here...

One of my favorite things to do!

I like to do personal data work for my own well-being and finding out exactly what the mass is using, what they think; and then type reports out on how we can make it better, or what exactly every one wants, based on my data. Then submit them to companies that they apply too.

I figured that maybe one day they'll read them, if they arn't already and do something about what ever topic im on. Maybe one day.... *(dreams)*

Oh, PS. I have no life.... :D

Actually a CRT 19".... But after this summer maybe a 18" or 19" LCD..... :P

You know your "Statistical" results will be biased (extreeeeemely biased) if you want to gather this information from here, right?

There are statistics sites for that, where you can get figures that are accurately normally distributed

Not only that, but it's actually illegal in quite a few countries to record data about people's usage habits or preferences without explicitly telling them that you're going to do it.

Also, you may need to be licensed to do this sort of thing, depending on the country you're in, and licenses for this don't come cheap...

#157411

Yes im aware of that...

I don't gather data as a hobby, or spend lots of time on it. I try to do at least one report a week, mostly on the weekend, and mostly just use data gathered from people I know / or comunicate with in a group or community.

Like this one.. I spend most of my day on aqua-soft reading posts, learning new things, and skinning stuff in the back ground. Im also developing a better finder in my spare time.

So in order to keep my self from getting fedup with stuff, I do a little worksheet to help me develope apps and skins in side aqua-soft, by asking questions, and getting the anwsers i need.

Now when im done making my new app / skin / exc, I use the data i gathered and submit it to companies that could possible use it. Instead of just letting it go to waste.

thats just political bs. if you dont want him to know something about you [on the topic he has brought up] dont post anything. its not that hard to rationalize. so now you need a licesense to ask someone a question? sad.

That doesn't make it any more moral. You're still collecting data about people without their knowledge.

You don't need a licence to ask a question, bunkka, you need a licence to write reports based on the information and give/sell this to companies. If he's providing reports based on data from A-S, for profit or not, it's still immoral and, in many countries, illegal not to inform the people who're providing the data.

I know that people who participate are aware they're answering a question/providing information - what they're uaware of is how it's being used.

Ok i don't see what all the fuss is about... I gather the data to better provide services to this community, in the release of my wallpapers, applications, skins, and theme files. That's it's main purpus...

I use the data Ive collected when im done to write a report, and submit it to a company so they can improve on products that protain to the topic im on. I don't sell the information or give it to a direct source. I send all my data to their companies support email address, It's not like they really read them any way, it's just something to do on my weekends.

I see nothing imoral, or wrong about it. If any thing it's a helping matter, that's how they get popcorn buttons on microwaves.

If your that upset about it, I won't bother...

I've got no objection to you collecting the data for your own use.

What I object to is the fact that you then take the data and submit reports based on it to third parties. I know for a fact that, even if they don't read the reports, the act of submitting them is illegal in the USA and Europe, at the very least, unless the people who're involved know how the information will be used (i.e. that it'll be passed on to someone else).

I'd have no objection to this, if you said in your polls "I may submit this data to third parties" or something, but you don't.

Aside from that, polls like this are never accurate, especially when they're as generic as "LCD or CRT", and no self-respecting company would read reports from some random person with no credentials - they'd buy the data from a respectable third party, if they wanted it, or pay for their own research to be done.

Also, the reason you get "popcorn" buttons on microwaves is more usually because of in-house testing, or brainstorming sessions ("what would be really cool for our next microwave?"), or because they've been paid by the popcorn companies to put the button there.

Well in a society where people always seem to find a way to suprise you, you should be very careful when giving out information. Granted you should be informed [no doub] what he is collecting the data for, but come on, you cant be that careless and tell someone everything that he wants to know.

Plus, how can u say "collecting data without their knowledge"? He blatantly asked a question. You reply or not, but if you say its without their knowledge, thats pretty ignorant on the persons part not to see that he IS ASKING A QUESTIOn. you dont have questions without a purpose right? whether it is to do a school report...just to waste time, its still has a purpose.

I dunno, i dont want a "war" but seriously if i give out information, and it gets "leaked" in a way i dont approve of, i would be pissed, but i shouldn't have given out the information in the first place.

.. i'm working in dual-monitor mode... i can never go back to single monitor mode. One 19" Samsung SuncMaster CRT, and a 17" LG monitor. Dual monitor makes for better productivity, especially when working in adobe/macromedia apps (menu/tool menus can fill the right monitor leavng the left screen for your compositions).

I'm a graphic artist for the local newspaper and I say when pixel design concerned CRTs dominate. I'm still waiting for LCDs to advance to the quality and clarity that only CRTs can provide.

Does the fact that it's legal in Canada (which I quite frankly doubt) mean that it's moral in Canada?

People may not see the big deal, but they should. Ok, so they're not giving you their names, addresses, or whatever, but that's not the point - they're providing data that you then submit to third parties without their prior knowledge of how this data would be used and that, no matter where you are in the world, is highly immoral in my view (and in the view of most of the world's legal institutions).

How d'you think a human rights activist (for example) would feel if you submitted the information they provided to an organisation who uses "sweat shops", or whatever? They'd be pissed.

Also, as Aqua-Soft is hosted in the US, posts made on the site must, as a bare minimum, adhere to US law, and so your "I'm in Canada" argument still doesn't hold.

#157428

Zandor, i can tell you from experience in the field that you sending them your own home made "statistical" reports will not accomplish anything, trust me, they are not going to waste their time reading this because, as they very well know, the spectrum will be biased (in the case of aqua soft) i would say completely biased, showing only one range of the application spectrum for which they would gain knowledge about.

When the company i work for buy statistical records it is usually made with the same TRUSTED company; developed for us particularly, and i can tell you that a FORTUNE goes out for that...

The real asset of such reports is that companies will infer the applicability of a marketing/developing move (a move that could either make them successful or ruin their reputation forever). These inferences will obviously not be taken lightly. Trust me, they will not even look at your records.

And, the fact that it is legal or illegal (Stevie is completely right here). You are always better of stating the why's and the how's when collecting data, EVEN if it is in such a casual home made way as this. People will generally dont mind/dont care... but you never know ;)

#157429

I have nothing to say, I don't care, I give up...

Now i can see why developers don't stick around here that much...

#157430

srry i have to reply. if you leave because someone doesn't like what your doing, thats just being immature. if a company you were submitting this "info" to objected to something you did, would you get mad? just apply this to the real world, people are not going to like what you have to say all the time, just live with it, its part of life whether your in the [edit]U.S. [best place on earth] or Canada [neutral living people], its life.[edit]

Zandor, please allow other views to be put across, have we closed the topic? have we told you to remove it? we have just raised a point - a valid point- i have noticed that whenever someone says something against your views, you take that attitude. Developers go because they are hassled by people asking them quick releases, perfect running programs, quickly and free. I dont how or why this has anything to do with it, and quite frankly you have not been here long enough to be able to state such a fact.

#157434

your a developer

are u gonna make an app that makes random pollz, and digs up year old threads,

dude, why can u just be a NORMAL member of this site, why are u trying to creat controversy. i keep finding u arguing with the staff here. u must not want to be a productive member here.

well anyway if u keep going down this path im sure your gonna get the boot. maybe thats what u want.

who knows.

OH, and what difference could what type of moniter u use when preparing to make an osx related app ?
