Are You A.....

There are those of us out there that want things that are not MAC like, those little add-ons and so forth that make every one a windows lover, the utilitarianists.

Some of us like our PCs, to be exactly mac functional those are the Purists...

The question is what are you?

#156490

Come on people VOTE!

#156494

lol, do you know what a utilitarian is?

#156499

Yep,

A person that wants stuff added, like diffrent themes, like milk, pinstripe, bla bla bla, along with options and settings that are not mac related. For instance a button that changes colors, or so forth. I can't exactly get what im saying out. Im sure you get what I mean...

#156500

But what is a utilitarian? Simply one who prefers the useful to the useless; and who does not? --Sir W. Hamilton.

#156505

 i just see Jeremy Bentham when you say utilitarian, Utilitarianism holds that the good is whatever brings the greatest happiness to the greatest number of people, though Bentham himself, after realizing that the formulation recognized two different and potentially conflicting maximanda, dropped the second part and talked simply about "the greatest happiness principle". but me = :smartass: carry one

repeat it, infinitum

and as you're repeating it, visit Neowin, DT2, and Hardwaregeeks

they're more suited to Non-mac people

Go Duckie! Well Said!

Well, Bentham was the founder with John Stuart Mill's father. But, John Stuart really expanded on the core ideas of utility. I do like the idea that we should better ourselves for the sake of others, however, when Mill starts talking about the true good in actions is when I am turned off. I don't think that actions are only good if the ends are good. I am more of a means kinda guy, like Kant. Sorry to turn this into a philosophical debate, I just loved philosophy class (gotta love a liberal arts education). Although, I cannot stand Nietzche >.

#156579

^^^ i am more of a Kant type of guy too ;) but Kant just went opposite directions to Utilitarism, thats why i quoted Bentham ;)

And Nietzsche IS my favourite philosopher ;) so shutyomauz:P

Before purchasing my Mac, I hardly played with OSX more than a few minutes, so an app like Jib's address book, which is actually very 'purist', was very awkward feeling for me.

Now though, having become accustomed to OSX and the real Apple apps, if I were to have a second comp, a Windows machine, I would hands down go the purist route, without a doubt.

But I imagine the majority of A-S members have probably *never* used a Mac and whether they know it or not, prefer utilitarian modding (e.g. app skinning) out of sheer ignorance, which is unfortunate but understandable.

#156663

i began as a purest...got board with it and i guess i beace an ultraman(that just dosn't sound right :P ), got board with most of the dark themes.so currently im back to being a purest with panther. and yes i have A.D.D.,

eww, im on the same side as duckie....

should i start acting like a jerk too (calm down duckie, that was a JOKE :P )

I know every one out there has a prefrence, and for what ever reason they are not voting.

Your votes are counting tword up coming projects, so please vote so we are able to tell what exactly is in higher demand.

#156906

Have been a PURIST ever since I joined. If I skin Windows I will always use either Panther or Jaguar style skins. But nowadays my Themes service is disabled so I'm back to Classic which is the best. -_-

#156916

I like the Mac look, and mac themes that have been ported (Milk especially), but if it doesn't work, or is not functional, then odds are, I won't use it. However, my parents have just upgraded their nasty old 9.2 G3 to Panther, so I'm going to sneak on it when they're not looking and have a play around. Maybe I'll come to love the Mac way...

#156925

I've been on Macs before, but not for very long but I love them, they are so cool, alright the opposite side close, min and maximize are hard to get used to but I love everything about it, if roxors my soxors.

So I would definetly say a purist, which is why I have disabled the themes service on Windows XP because no offence to any modders, infact why would this, but the current limits of Windows i.e. No Genie Effect, close, maximize, minimize on the right etc. Do not appeal to me.

hey, this thread is in general discussion. if someone doesn't like the topic, they wont post/vote. your not asking any questions that would benefit them. like you said in your other post, you ask these questions for personal reasons. most members dont care whos who on here because they come for their own reasons [like me]. i voted, but you cant expect everyone to.

A Q U A - SOFT

I use a Mac all day and a PC at home and as soon as I started using the Mac I gave up on the purist way - because I know it will never even be close - who am I trying to kid?

Fair enough - this is aqua soft - but it still covers a broad range or do you propose we stick to panther full stop? You have to draw a line somewhere between looking 'like' a mac and being able to use my PC properly.

#157847

I am a Utilitarian however, I am pure when it comes to what my desktop is like. I guess I'm digitally claustrophobic.

I definately agree with you there.. I cannot stand any loose files on my desktop - EVERYTHING must be clear apart from my Avedesk icons.... without doubt and I think 90% of the people here are the same....

#158471

MACs are cool but I don't want EVERYTHING to even look like a MAC. I just like Apple's Apps. As far as their GUI goes, I really don't care!

#158549

I've been a Windows user even before Windows were born, and I wouldn't abandon XP so easily.

I love the looks and design of OSX and I'd like my PC to look as close as possible, but there are a few things I wouldn't want here (app menu on taskbar, resizing windows by handle only etc)

I guess I'll vote blank!

#158563

what the hell? your "upcoming projects" scare me.
