[help] Hard Drive Failure

My hard drive quit last night,

I came home from work tried to boot up and it quit at the start up screen... tried to boot into safe mode and it did but it was running really slow. Tried to do system restore but it stop responding. Restarted again...nothing. Wouldnt even boot into safe mode. Started windows recovery console and ran chkdsk and it stopped at 25 percent. restarted... nothing. Finally after a bit the computer started to go back to windows and said that it needed to check c drive for errors.

It found a bunch of errors, restarted and now it says there is no system disk.

Can someone please reccomend a good program for recovering lost information or provide any other advice?

Any tell tale signs why it quit, bzeitler? Sounds emitted?

You can try accessing it from a host drive/PC should you have a spare.

there are apps like ez recovery and others (don't know the names) that you can use to recover data, but they're not free, and i don't know the limits of the demo versions.

stick the drive in another pc as a slave and see if you can access it.

It doesnt realy sound like a hard drive falure, sounds more like the system is rebooting because of soemthing. How are your system temps from your bios? Are all the fans functioning?

As far as partition/data recovery, i highly recomend Acronis recovery expert, but i doubt thats the problem. Like they said try it in another computer.

The drive is definitely screwed. When I click on it I get this message:

I tried arconis recovery expert... but it says that it cant find any deleted partitions. It does show both drives and the amount of space that is taken. The files are definitely still there I just cant access them. I also tried pc inspector recovery, but it returns an error message and just quits. Anybody have any other suggestions??

did you check the app i suggested in the last post of the thread i linked to you? i was getting the same issue, and with this pc recovery expert program i got my files out of the fire... it is also freeware!

Thanks seph, thats the first thing I tried... Unfotunately, it starts to read and then I get an error. I forget what the exact message was, I will post it later when I am home from work again. It was something about an invalid or illegal read...

Anyways, previously when I would right click the drive I showed exactly like the screenshot in sephs thread... 0 free space 0 used space and formated raw... Now when I right click it, it shows things the way they should be formatted NTFS 40 gig it even shows how much space is actually free. Now when I click on the drive it opens up and show one folder with a bunch of files in it.. (none that I recognize.)

I guess that is sort of progress. But I still dont have my stuff. Luckily, I had most of my pictures backed up, but none of my music. I feel like such an idiot.

Hopefully I will figure it out soon.

Don't know how much help this might be for you, but if you did any type of modification to your system, ie: added new hard drive, cd-drive, new video card you might have issues with power supply. I had similar thing happen to me and when I tried stronger psu the hard drive continued working as before.

Make sure you try the hard drive on a friend's computer or something. it might be your computer that's making the problems.

Problem Solved!!!!!!!!!

I found the most remarkable program today... after about a week of trial and error... I found this:

restorer 2000

it only costs 29 bucks and it found every single file that I had lost in minutes! The other programs that I had been using had to work overnight! I donwloaded this, the scan took 5 minutes and it restores all of your files in their existing structure in no time!
