Right-click your desktop and go 'Properties'.
Go to Appearance -> Effects.
Check the box called 'Hide underlined blah blah for alternate blah blah'...
Click 'OK'.
Done. And yes this trick works. I just tried it.

i dont get it, it still appears sometimes, is there a way to COMPLETELY whipe out it?
i don't know of any way to completely remove the rectangle. it's ugly and annoying, but that trick is best way to remove it (in most cases).
I am thinking...if we know where the color setting of this is, we might change it to be transparent...just a thought I don't know if that makes any sense....
yeah, but then that presents 2 problems:
1. how does one find out where the rectangle info is stored?
2. the rectangle does have a purpose. if it were completely invisible, it would make it difficult to use keyboard shortcuts.
I bet some poeple here know where it is stored...like Stephanka...he knows everything in shell32...
I don't use that much keyboard shortcuts except for Clt-C Clt-V...most already memorized anyway.
but maybe it's not located inside a well-documented dll. it could take a while to discover.
not necessarily ctrl + c, but other keyboard shortcuts that require the rectangle, like tabbing one's way through a dialog, would become more difficult tasks.
In panther snow (by Stepenka) when I tab through the dialog box the botton/field turns blue so I know exactly where it is however I am not sure about the other VS especially like milk, since it will be all white.
