[help] I Need It With New Hd

Hello, I installed a new, larger, WD HD and used Drive Image to make a copy of C. These are my issues. Please help. Thanks

My desktop is H but the program files is C so everything is all mixed up. I changed the label of each drive but it now says DriveC(H) How do I change H to C (not just the label) - I only changed the jumpers - do I really need to swap cable ends? **edit -I will change it

**edit - I switched cable ends and rebooted and got boot error. I put cables back - boot ok.

I tried the "lifegard" software that came with the WD Hard drive but it does not even work. It installs but will not even run.

I tried just the new HD alone and it will not boot.

changing system partition letters is generally risky, though. i think partition magic can change it as well.

however, since you have an image, you might as well start over and make sure it copies properly this time. that's probably the easiest (and safest) way.

Simply changing the label doesn't work. You need to change the actual drive letter as in the screenshot I've attached.

but you can't change the drive letter of the partition where you have your windows installed on using the disk manager (as shown in that screenshot)

i don't have any experience with those apps, but i used the western digital tool, and it worked well.

that's the tool that came with the HD "lifeguard" It does nothing when I click the exe

anyway, the one thing that i did not try was to run it as master alone - well it boots up to log on screen but no user account so i'm just going to run repair. Thanks for the responding fellas

hmm, the app worked flawlessly for me. that's very odd.

i don't think a repair will change system labels, though. you might run into problems if you don't have it set to c:.

YAHOOOOOOOO! -

1. In Disk Management - format new HD and DO NOT ASSIGN DRIVE LETTER

2. In Drive Image - Copy drive and DO NOT ASSIGN DRIVE LETTER

3. Unplug old drive and change jumper to master in new drive

4. Boot - will automatically assign to Drive C

5. Done

Really i think is better to never install windows on the C drive!

All of my computers have windows installed on other drive..

This is a simple solution to protect your computer against some poorly written spyware and worms.

Well, for a while there it was pretty confusing. I had windows booting with Drive H but the program files were operating from Drive C. My destop was drive H

kind of on the subject of program files and where you install programs can be changed with a registry hack too: -

As the size of hardrives increase, more people are using partitions to seperate and store groups of files.

XP uses the C:\Program Files directory as the default base directory into which new programs are installed. However, you can change the default installation drive and/ or directory by using a Registry hack.

Run the Registry Editor (regedit) and go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

Look for the value named ProgramFilesDir. by default,this value will be C:\Program Files. Edit the value to any valid drive or folder and XP will use that new location as the default installation directory for new programs.
