[discussion] Left Handers! Unite!

I was just thinking about this. And it's a really odd story. When I was young (about 6-7ish) I was left handed in everything. I remember because we went through so much to find left handed scissors, left handed baseball glove, left handed hockey stick, etc... etc... etc... And then one year (I think I was 9), I was right handed. So we had to buy a right handed baseball glove, you know all the things that have different forms for each hand. But only my writting stayed the same. Actually, my writting because ambidextrous. But I mostly write with my left hand.

Anyway, is anyone out there left handed?

I used to hustle people at school by betting them I could hit a 3-pointer right and left handed.

I´m lefty handed too... and because of that i had to evolve a new method to use can openers... lol.

But... i use mouse, joysticks and PC, and even play bass guitar, just like right handed ppl. In fact, i can´t even hold a bass on the left way, just feel all wrong.

That's a pretty large margin dont you think?

Also, I know the reason why I can use both my right and left hands. When I was a child I shattered my righ arm in a slide accident. So I was forced to go lefty for about a year an a half. Since then, I can do things both righty and lefty comfortably.

Funny, I read somewhere that it had to do with your brain being a mirror of a right handed person? i.e. the things that are controlled by the left side of the brain for right handed people are controlled by the right side in the case of a left-handed person?

@ronin: isn't it ironic though, that right handers hold the guitar in such a way that all their "better" hand does is strum... and the left hand's fingers fly

I don't play left handed guitar/bass, but I had a buddy that did. For a while we were going to start a band, he was freaking awsome. It was funny because he could never find a nice left handed guitar, so he got a right-handed one and flipped the strings around. And then he had to reposition the nut for the strap. The problem was, he would only have a guitar for a limited amount of time, and then he would smash it. Literally, he would pound it into the ground out of frusration or for fun. So he would have to buy another guitar. In a 2 year span, he went through some odd 7 guitars.

that's just insane. i could never trash my guitars. and it wasn't too hard to find my lefties. my dad bought me my first two, and i bought my last 7-string online.

but you know what they say: lefties are smarter. :smartass:

I´´ve tought about this sometime ago... my better hand keeps on frets, and my "bad" hand just pluck the strings... it´s a good thing... the only draw back is that i can´t use a pick (maybe, it´s just lack of training).

BTW... there a guitar player here in Brazil, famous, from a band called "IRA" (Rage, in english - nothing to do with Ireland), his name, Edgar Scandurra. When he was young and started playing guitar, he used to take his brother guittar without his knowlegment. His brother was righty and he is lefty... but, no way for him to change all the strings and put back fast enought on his brother guitars... until today, he plays guitar on the strangest way i ever seen... he plays like a lefty, but with the cords on E - B - G - D - A - E from from top to bottom... is totaly strange see him making chords all inverted on the neck.

I'm left handed and could use (until today) both legs to play soccer with, although my left leg was more powerfull, but the I performed the cool moves/tricks with my right foot.

About 3% of the population is left-handed (source: some textbook I read a while ago ).

What I am curious about is if you left-handed-people also shoot balls with your left foot?

hmmm i'm right-handed, right-legged, but left-eyed. does that count?

(in case someone's wondering, there IS such a thing. it's the eye you chose to determine the direction you point at stuff)

i'm kinda mixed but i woldn't dare to say i'm ambidextrous. for instance, i do some things on the keyboard (music) with my left hand than with my right one. also! i cut my right hand nails (using my left hand) better than my left hand nails (using my right hand)

Im a lefty when it comes to anything involving paper and a writing or painting utensil. Everything else I do with my right hand. I used to bet people a lot in golf that I could hit the ball 250+ yards both rigty and lefty. So Im partially ambi.

I read somewhere that left handedness usually means your more of an open minded and creative person and you tend to think more analytically don't know how those two things fit together. Guess it just means that there is a method to our left handed madness

@sid, i've got a yamaha acoustic (steel-string), a black fender strat, and a black pearl ibanez rg7421 7-string.

@wookietv, jimi did flip the strings on a righty guitar because he was a lefty. before i got my lefty guitars, i used to take a righty guitar and play it like i would a lefty (but without flipping the strings). it actually isn't as hard as one would think, and it was fun too.

@andreas, i use my left foot to kick (especially in taekwondo), and i play tennis with my left hand.

i'm a pure lefty!
