Sam 1.4x Ampi Problems

Jeez! I had everything running great using Tadis' Milk Suite, and then I had to go and install version 1.41.

The weather widget and system widget work just as before, but album art and winamp widgets just won't work. Additionally, I tried CRNI's GUiPod and someone elses iTunesBar. None of these work correctly. It seems there is just a general problem with the AdvancedMediaPlayerInfo plugin.

Anyone, HELP!

At this point I am really upset that NeM and crew seem to screw up as much as they fix with each release. That just isn't good coding or good marketing. :evil:

I mean, I love what Samurize can do, but every upgrade seems to just break everything again and everyone in the community spends all sorts of time fixing things that weren't broken. :pchawk:

The sad part is that I have already installed the "fix" and it only made the situation worse. Before the fix I at least saw the cd cover widget on screen (albeit with no cover art). Now the widget doesn't appear at all.

i had same problem, I think that fixed files are even worse. :6 but we have to be patient, and wait for next fix release or something....

i have no problems with Samurize 1.41

GuiPod works perfect.

@Alilm: About just exactly what am I ignorant about? The widgets worked just fine under 1.3x. I upgraded to 1.41. Then they don't work. I run the 'fix' for them and things get worse. I completely uninstall Samurize, reinstall 1.41, reinstall Milk 0.2, still doesn't work, reinstall Milk 0.2 fix, still doesn't work.

I understand programming is not an easy thing, particularly for an app with as many capabilities as Samurize. My only point is, with every release, as many problems are created as are solved. I have seen far to many posts of people who refuse to use Samurize or have quit using it for exactly this reason, and for almost no other app. That is not good for Samurize, and ultimately not good for the community.

If Samurize were released as betaware, that would be one thing. You expect to have problems with betaware. Samurize is not. 1.41 (and the last few previous releases) were released as upgrades to a complete app.

I additionally understand that Samurize is not commercial software and that some leeway should be given. However, Firefox, VideoLAN and eMule (all apps I use) are also not commercial and yet they do not have anywhere near the problems with each new release from which Samurize suffers.

On which of these points am I showing ignorance?

Have you tried uninstalling Samurize and deleteing all of the widgets and what not.

Then reinstall the newest Samurize and then install the GUI Pod thing.

Maybe you shouldn't update Samurize, uninstall then reinstall the newest one.

Excuse me if I'm wrong but that procedure always seems to work for me.

@ Samurize Developers = And great app guys. Don't listen to rude comments. Your app is great, but some people have problems with it. It's a very complicated thing. We understand. Even DesktopX has problems and that is less powerful and less flexible. And it's a comercial program. No hard feelings.

In honesty, the problem isn't with Samurize as much as with us pushing its limits. In its current form, Samurize doesn't have the native ability for multi-moded configs or animation such as in winamp etc...

If any widgets that use my multi-moded scripts don't work such as Crni's GUIpod or my Milk Suite then the fault is totally mine.

I'm just glad that NeM and the crew are understanding enough to look favourably on our modifications and continue development alongside our own.

The question about whether samurize should still be in beta has been raised before, I just think its a question of semantics!

I don't care whether it's 1.4 or 0.4 Beta I'll still use it.

@Tadis, I appreciate your saying all that. I very much appreciate the stuff that guys like you and CRNI put out. I don't know that I would have the patience to do some of the stuff you guys do. :woot:

I also appreciate NeM and the gang doing what they do. I hope no one misunderstands that.

I simply would like to be able to consistently have the app work from one iteration to the next. I didn't mind having to do some tweaking on widgets when I first got Samurize cause I know that's how things like this work. Just doing it over and over gets tiresome.

Maybe I should just get deeper into Samurize myself and learn how to do this stuff. :naughty:

AMPI is completely beyond my control - Tropics releases new versions of it and I distribute it with Samurize because it is without a doubt the most popular (and most impressive) Samurize plugin. It is entirely his work and he makes changes to it as he sees fit. I persoanlly have only once had a problem with this plugin in v1.3X, but the 1.4X one works fine for me.

Sometimes changes must be made to Samurize that accidentally break some small things... the great configs tadis etc. have been made with a lot of enhancements (or "hacking" ) that rely on certain aspects of Samurize. When one of these aspects changes slightly, it breaks these configs. It's not directly our fault, and the creators of these configs should tweak them to fit with the new versions.

As far as I am aware the only changes that have occured that have caused problems are the instance change (the "i=" thing - necessary for enhancements to Samurize's command-line options), that error with the Milk Suite that was caused by tadis incorrectly (but innocently) using plugin meters with no function/DLL selected, and the AMPI problems which as I mentioned, are beyond my control. We do not deliberately introduce changes to break these things; they are like many things software related, unwanted "side effects".

Aside from these, what else do you think we have "screwed up"?

Let me point out that configs created with the Config Editor since v0.85b of Samurize more or less work with the current versions - if you were a "mainstream" Samurize user (making configs yourself) you would experience little to no problems whatsoever.

As babypapichulo pointed out, if you have been having no problems with the Milk Suite or whatever, and you don't use Samurize for anything but that, then why update at all?

And as for the beta thing... all software has bugs, whether beta or not Nobody's perfect... and remember Samurize is free

@NeM I appreciate everything you have said. As stated previously, I do understand that Samurize is free and I understand that I didn't have to upgrade. The only reason I did was because of the list of fixes and because at that time I did not find any comments about any problems with the configs I use. Live and learn
