It can be done.

Lindows is the best for newcomers. ( it's not free >.< )

Use Partion Magic If your planning to use XP and Linux in the same drive. Cause if you don't when you use the installation CD (that you'll have to make if you don't use Lindows, since you purchase it they ship it) there's a high chance that the OS could take a chunk of data.

Get your glasses ready cause when some one ask for help I HELP. Your gonna need to do a whole latta reading.

I recommend you BookMark those.

Hope that helps. ;)

thanks a ton..

now what version of linux I hear alot of talk about fedora and mandrake

#146200

I use Fedora Core 1.

There is a newer version avaliable but it is still in testing.

If your interested it's called Fedora Core 2 Test 2.

Official Website Here

BTW, Fedora is from the creators of RedHat Linux, which you probably heard of.

BTW 2, In fact Fedora is the new name of RedHat. ( not the enterprise edition the free version ).

SuSE is nice...I prefer solaris though for work and security. Thats UNIX though, not linux.

#146213

I'm about to install Gentoo. I've heard lots of good stuff about it, but it has to be installed from a command line >.< , which is hard for people like me, who have used windows their whole life

#146403

Command Line?

Thers no Command Line in Linux.

You mean Terminal.

#146404

I would go for SuSE..surely if you can get the PRO version...

there is alot to learn about linux.

I've also began a few years just like you..but I began with RedHat. And after that I said no..let me try something alittle bit easier so I went for SuSE.

And lindows..yes I've tried that. ANd i have version 3..It's not bad...

But it's still not Linux (or Unix)....

and also when installing I would suggest get a second harddrive. and install it there. Like you I wanted to do that. And well let's say it didn't go the way it should go. Just to be at the save side.

But as soon as you got it running ect...you will love it.

I love my SuSE 9 :P...

thanks

Of course there's a command line. What do you think you're looking at inside an open terminal. ;)

Personally, I think Mandrake and Fedora are really crappy, buggy distros.

I suggest MEPIS and KNOPPIX. They run right from the CD (no need to touch your harddrive), and they're really stable. They also come with lots more stuff.

Also, both can install to your harddrive if/when you're ready.
