How to make docks run even smoother

Few moments ago i uninstalled latest det40 so i can install 40.72 WHQL...

When the installer finished uninstalling old (actually new) 40s, i hesitated for a moment at the "restart?" prompt and noticed a funny thing

MY DOCK RAN FASTER!!!

About that moment i realised that installer killed a process that obviously steals cpu time from the dock and then i remembered!

In one of my previous battles with detonators i noticed there's a process that they (30s AND 40s) run at startup that sometimes (rarely) cause freezups and weird behaviour... the process' entry in task manager's process list is a generic "rundll32" as it's really a dll so i never paid any attention to it untill then...

i completely forgot about it untill now!

It seems that killing "rundll32" adds some FPS to Y'Z dock (who knows, maybe it would've made the old version of y'z dock run smooth too) and doesn't harm the drivers in any obvious way...

It also makes Mobydock A LOT FASTER... if there are still any users out there with a slow running mobydock, this could be your cure... it really DOES make a difference...

PS: Also, it seems that WHQL 40.72s are faster than old (beta) 40.72s or 41.03s... i recomend them warmly...

DO NOT KILL RUNDLL32.DLL WITH TASK MANAGER!!!

Ok, the rundll32.dll he is speaking of is the Nvidia tray icon. Simply disable it. That is all.

This can be done either in the display properties or in your msconfig.

#1270

Well, NOT EXACTLY!!!

Disabling the nvidia tray icon removes ONE OF THE RUNDLLS!!! NOT THIS ONE!!!

This one is, i think, for keeping the clock settings (not refresh rate, but memory and cpu clock) BUT ALTHOUGH YOU DISABLE IT (AND THE NVIDIA TRAY ICON) IT STILL REMAINS LOADED WASTING YOUR MEMORY AND INTERFERING WITH MOBYDOCK!!!

So go ahead and try to kill it via task manager... if **** happens, reboot and never do it again... if not, everyone's happy...

EDIT: And yes, for a permanent solution, find it in runservices or run in registry or via msconfig and remove it...

There is no need to get angry :)

I've tried and yes, it added some speed to my Y'z dock... somebody knows what exactly run32.dll does? I was believing that it is a system process (I mean, native from WinXP) and not a driver loaded program. Somebody knows?

I've done google searches on what rundll32.dll does but all that I found is solutions to a whole lot of problems that can occur with rundll32.dll. One of them was like a page default error.

#1488

Rundll32.dll? Well, from past experience i remember someone telling me that it ran certain DLL files that normally wouldnt work by themselfs. I personally have it disable because it does absolutely NOTHING for me but, who knows, might acutally DO SOMETHING for some people. If you ask me though, i have to say its another one of those "Windows Likes Having Usless Things Running" Problem.

#1492

Well... not pretty sure about the use of the program, but certainly, after close it, Y'z dock is noticeable faster.

I suggest to kill it manually everytime until make sure you really don't need it.

#1494

heh well it seems my rundll32.dll does not even load up period and I haven't even done anything to stop it........well I disabled this messenger program from starting up and now it says I need to change my boot up back to the way it was but I never do and it is just fine.

Here is a list of processes (although rundll32.dll is not there):

#1523

Well....goto Services and try and disable the Nvidia Driver Helper Service.....I think this increases the speed of the Y'z Dock (I have 0.3 and I did notice a slight improvement).....Strangely this also makes Windows XP shut down faster

#1530

I think the proces in question here is the "nvidia driver helper service".

*edit*, heh.. siddarth beat me to it.

#1531

LOL.....sorry buddy...but you probably thought of the solution before I did :):):)

Peace,

Siddharth
