[help]*.gif...horrible Quality

Does anyone know how to make it so gifs dont look like complete sh*t? DA requires gifs for avatars for some stupid reason <_< and I cant figure out how to make it not look like ass. Any ideas?

[sort of on topic]

I'd like to know why they (some?) won't resize (even to a rez that scales to it) without getting lotsa jaggies

I think it's because .gifs can't go above 256 colours

It's true that GIFs cannot go above 256 colors, but I've never had problems making avatars in GIF format..

Animated PNGs are *.MNG aren't they? And I think there is very little support for them.

Well I see people on DA with these REALLY awesome animated gifs and they dont seem to have any problem at all with color loss. I save mine in paint (part of the problem?) because photoshop doesnt allow it (wtf, eh?).

you have to go to save for web in ps ;)

Yes, cf is right. PS creates it's own palette (sp?), rather than using the normal GIF palette. And for ani gif's, it's still one palette for all the frames. Buy don't use ani gif's. :6

Ahh well saving it in PS fixed my problem. I have used save for web before, I dont know why I didnt look there....I guess I was hoping they added direct gif support in PS 8.

I remember a saving type in Fireworks called "exact" (for gif)...increased the file size but as long as it wasn't a huge image, I didn't have any file size problems

Yes, Save for Web in Photoshop and select the color mode you want, there are several. Adaptive means it fits, within the 256 color quota, as closely as possible. Web will give you trouble if your image uses any color that is not a web color.
