[Preview] System Specs - Etc.

I am just waiting until I have checked one thing before I release it, but I wanted to find out what some of you think of it so far :)

is this a [wip]-work in progress- or a [preview] ? tell me so i can edit your topic title and tag it properly.

About the apple on the config, that's not KSO's apple, is it? and if it is, do you have permission?

Other than that, looks good

#145252

Actually, I guess it's a preview...it's basically done, just waiting to check something on it.......and I actually have no idea who did the apple, I got it from a friend =\. I have no problem giving credit where it's due though ;)

#145259

Ok, cool, my recommendation is, you either get permission from the author (not sure if its KSO) and then release it. Else, use another icon for which you do have permission.

I wouldnt want this turn into a flamewar. Permissions here are important ;)

Next time, keep in mind that threads need to be tagged ;):D

My guess is that Winapple was done by Jatin. He's a member here. (I guess Jatin rather than KSO since Jatin's icon/pngs were released much more recently)

#145268

Thanx for the correction autumnmist ;)

There you go, you have a member to PM now ;)

#145270

I like the 'boxed' skin, did you do that yourself? ;)

#145290

Hehe, don't worry Tadis, all the credits where credits are due will be given out accordingly...in your case it will be that I used your skin as a base to create this one that meets my needs for size ;) (which let me say was not as simple as a little copy and paste job :P)

#145308

Maybe it would be cool to change fonts in this config...just a thought  These seem rough to me. Apart of that it looks good ;)

#145379

looks good but I think you need to start burning some stuff off the hard drive LOL

2 gigs free :canadian: :canadian: :canadian:

#145383

i guess it's not really my cup of tea. i agree with Pe7er about the fonts and was never taken with the winapple thing. i did like the boxy-but-yet-rounded-ness of it though

No offence, I don't mean to sound negative or anything about your preview, but other than changing the dimensions what have you done? <_<

I don't mind at all when someone uses my work, look/ask around I have never withheld permission, resources or my help to anyone that needs it, just recently Voodoo released his excellent rainlender skin based on my Milk skin.

However, sometimes I feel that people are too quick to say 'I based it on...' when in fact all you have done is cut out a middle section of my image.

Just look at your wording:

in your case [Tadis] it will be that I used your skin as a base...

the word 'base' implies that my skin is somewhere underneath your work, i.e. a starting/reference point from where your artistic abilities takeover, from what I can see you have neither changed the colours, the shadows or the textures!

Furthermore, you state:

...to create this one that meets my needs for size

to create?

Please look up the meaning of the word 'creation' in a dictionary:

1. To cause to exist; bring into being.

2. To give rise to; produce: 'That remark created a stir.'

3. To produce through artistic or imaginative effort: create a poem; create a role.

You have not caused the skin to exist or brought it into being or given rise to the skin or produced the skin through artistic or imaginative effort.

So to say that you 'created' the skin is slightly pompous if not downright offensive.

Why couldn't you just have said that you 'altered' or 'cut out a middle section' or 'resized' my skin? for one think it would have stopped my fingers from hurting by typing out this rather long rant!

#145744

hmm

Tadis is right!

He is the grand master of Samurize and it`s not fair to do a make up (if even that)of his config and present him with just a credit (without even asking him first if he`s ok with it).

Tadis, you have my full support with this -_-

#145760

Wow, *Mr Roger's says, "Can you say 'chill-pill'..."*

Call the freaking grammar/wording police! Tadis, forgive me for not wording my whole statement in a manner that could enable you to sleep at the end of the day. Whatever you want to call what I did, I could care less....I used your skin, modified it, blah blah blah......after all this trouble, I'm not gonna bother "releasing it publically" so don't worry...I made it for myself, it was my first config, and since I'm very new to all of this, I was just posting it to see what people thought.

I'm surprised you didn't have enough sense to take it as a compliment that I not only used your graphic in my config, but also gave you the credit for it in my post.....if you are out for blood, you better go somewhere else to get it cuz I'm outta here.....I don't need the grief from you

#145762

Ok, people, calm down...

Tadis was only looking for recognition, he has done a lot of work and i think it is understandable to see how he though he was getting not enough credit.

I can tell you for the time i have been here, tadis is not out for blood as you have mentioned, he has no problem giving permission, in fact i have never encountered a time in which he has denied it...

Just to clarify the situation, sa maybe you dont know how much of a cooperative member Tadis is. I am sure if he offended you, that wasnt his intention, now lets all cool downd and try to loook at this positively :D :orgy: <-wiz, sorry im using your emot.

The point that I was trying to make doesn't simply apply to my work but applies as a general standard, but anyway here it is:

I honestly do not give a flying ... if people modify work or share it, that is what it's there for, in fact if you look at some of my posts you'll see that I try to encourage co-operation and sharing within the community.

If Shuey had shared the mod I wouldn't have responded, if he had said: 'look what I did', I wouldn't have responded.

However, what Shuey did is hold out something for which he made it appear that he did the majority of the work for and even after I gave him a chance (in a comical way) to correct himself, he chose to respond in the manner I examined in my last post.

Furthermore, the bit he wrote in brackets, regarding not being a simple process of copy and paste, was all the more insulting and misleading in that he, in fact, did little more than 'copy and paste'.

To further elaborate on my position on this issue, I try my best to help others when I can. I try to contribute my limited skills to the projects of others in the hope of helping them accomplish their goals. You could go as far as saying I enjoy the process of team-work and contribution that is an integral part of being an active community member.

If you look at some screenshots in the monthly ss thread, you'll see some amazing mods of people's work (I'm especially liking Ultraman's work at the moment). I applaud creativity and sometimes I stand amazed at what people have accomplished in the name of GUI design.

The bottom line is this: it's not about permission and credit, its about creativity, artistic flair, merit and contribution. I'm sorry that I offended you Shuey, I truly am, and maybe I came across as harsh and pedantic, but I stand where I stand.

Edit:

For the record, (I didn't read unbeliever's post thoroughly enough) the grand masters of Samurize are NeM, Alderaic, AdamC, Tropics, Torsius and the rest of the Samurize Crew. We don't thank them enough for their work!

#145777

just for the record Tadis is an extremly pleasent person and is always ready to help.

He wrote (didn`t just give me the permission) the script so it would suit my upcoming config.

I have utter respect for him and i don`t like when people do this (knowingly or not) -_-

#145814

Tadis I totally agree with you but your wording..even I took offense to it even though it wasn't directed at me. I luv you and your work Tadis and you're awesome at what you do but it seriously did seem like you were overreacting even though you said you weren't. You're a nice, helpful and thoughtful person. I'm sure that just about everyone on this board would agree with that and yes even Shuey's wording could have been better but when I first read your 2nd post it seriously did seem like you were taking out some frustration on him.

Just my 2 cents

well I for one understand Tadis point of view.. But on the other hand I understand Shuey's point of view..

Ok it breaks down like this.. We really need to teach people on proper ways to go about things.. I for one have been guilty of the 1st release using someones image thing.. Thats cause I didnt know you needed permission, now I do..

Seems like this is the case here.. Shuey felt that by acknowleging(sp) Tadis's work he was doing the right thing.. Where Tadis probably assumed he was stealing it.. Big misunderstanding..

What we should have done is told him that if he is going to use someones work as a base or as a whole he should at least get permission first.. Hell I have altered a Visual Style 100%, changed every last thing in it, but still wrote the author to let him know I used his visual style as a base, although he would never know, I felt it needed to be recognized as he is a great themer..

We are easy to jump all over someone before they know what the did was wrong. We need to explain and teach..

Think about this, for every time you did something wrong in life, imagine 5-30 people jumping all over you for it.. LOL life would be fun then..

Teach the new artists the correct ways.. So they can teach other new artists when we fade out...

Tadis & the rest of the members who viewed/replied to this post:

I read some of the replies since you and I posted our first remarks towards one another and I want to say something: I want to take responsibility for what I'VE done wrong. I never came to make this original post to brag about what I've done, to steal someone's work, or anything else that could've been viewed negatively. The bottom line is that I just got into Samurize only two weeks ago and ever since then I've been fascinated by it. I've also researched several things that have been created with it. A few of those things being your creations that you've made with/for it. And I'd like to say that, even though I've not seen EVERYTHING that has ever been made with it, your work is some of the cleanest, coolest stuff I've ever seen. I have a great deal of respect for your work AND what goes into it and I would never intentionally do anything to disrespect that (including rip off your work and claim it as my own).

Since I've gotten Samurize, I've only "played with" two configs: Weather Symbol & Chrome Clock. In that short time I played with it, I was amazed at the simplicity of the config editor and how it could be used. It's so powerful, yet it's very easy to use for someone who has little to no experience with something like it. So I started learning and teaching myself just like we all do when we're truly interested in something.

I check desktop screenshot galleries daily, not only to marvel at peoples work, but to also get ideas of what kinds of things I'D like to do with my desktop. One thing I knew I wanted to have was some kind of "system spec" widget/desklet. And because Tadis had done some of the best work I had seen (and I felt like he and I had very similar tastes as far as how we liked things to look), I went to his site to see if he had something I could download that would meet my needs. He had something that was close to what I was looking for, but there were two problems: 1- there were no available links to download from. 2- I wanted to create my own and incorporate some of his....I don't know, I'm too paranoind to even give it a word or phrase for fear that I'll say something wrong again =\....but I think you can get the idea....I wasn't out to rip him off in any way, I just wanted to create something and I liked his work.

I already had Tadis weather widget from his Milk Suite, so I knew that I wanted my other widgets to look similar. So I opened several of his weather skins in Photoshop to get an idea of which one I might like to try using. I made two versions of this widget I have shown you guys in this initial thread. I can't remember the EXACT details of how I went about trying to make this thing, but here is my best description. If I remember correctly, I took the skin from the "album art" media player widget and I removed the "inset" of it (it had a glassy reflective look). That skin seemed like it would be a good starting size but I had to removed the inset and then copy and paste "chunks" of one of the other skins to create a "different" inset than the one that was initially in there. I'm not a Photoshop pro, so what may "seem like" a quick copy and paste job was no quick job for me..it took me a bit of time because the skin I was using was a size all its own and there were not other skins of his that I could see that I could easily just copy and paste over this one...so I had to make several copies and pastes making them line up properly (you can see slight lines on the "inset image"). Then to make a long story short, I ended up figuring out how to do all the things I wanted this widget to do and I created and lined up all those in the widget. I showed it to only a few people in the Samurize IRC channel and they liked it so far but they gave me ideas of things to add or try to change (namely fonts & progress bars). I ended up trying a few other fonts, but because each diffferent font changed the whole skin, and they didn't seem to look as good as I was hoping they would, I just stayed with the font I was using. One reason I didn't want to change the font too was because it COULD create the need to resize the skin all together. And since I knew that would take ME longer than I wanted it to, I decided against it. BUT, adding the progress bars meant making the skin longer from top to bottom. I thought it would not be TOO bad to do, but it was far harder than I thought. I hadn't noticed that the skin I was using had a very slight shadow effect around it....I ended up using a whole different skin to create the size I wanted...if I remember correctly, it was one of the weather widget skins. I kept having trouble making the shadows look like they should when copying and pasting sections of the working skin into my new resized skin. Eventually I was able to make it the right size AND have it look like it should. I also wanted it to have some kind of logo/icon on it, and I'm not even sure for what reasons, but I just really liked the look of the winapple that a friend had given me.

I was so excited after creating this thing that I could hardly contain myself. It's something so simple and probably very easy for many of you veterans to create, but it was my first, it took a lot of work FOR ME, and after it was done I was VERY PLEASED with how it looked, what it did, and how it made me feel in creating it. I never thought for a second that I was ripping someone off or that I was gonna go tell the whole world that I created this thing from scratch.

It may have not been creating something in some peoples eyes, but it most certainly was creating something in my eyes because I had never done anything like this before. I have no major Photoshop skills...I have no coding experience of any kind.....so please don't think that I was trying to say that I "created" this thing all from my own resources, or that I had any intention of ripping someone off. As Ibanezcollector stated, I had no idea of the protocol I was supposed to take, but as soon as the first person told me something even remotely related to giving credit, I was more than willing and happy to say who I took ideas or whatever from. And I didn't know I was supposed to get permission....I wasn't stealing store bought software and I wasn't trying to sell my work. I completely realize now what the proper protocols are and in the future (if I ever have the courage to show my face again), I will make sure I do everything the "proper way".

I offer my sincere apology to you all and I hope that some of you can accept it and realize that I never meant any harm to anyone.

:(

Superb post... hope everything has been cleared up now... i am impressed, we rarely see threads "fixing themselves" like this one.
