[help] Changing System Icons

hi,

There is probably a really obvious answer to this, but i cant find it. How do I change the icons of system icons (by this I mean My Computer, My Music, etc). I can change ordinary icons through properites tab, but what about theses sytem ones?

Thanks for any help,

Snarf

Hi, you might want to browse trough the system files subforum in customizing windows GUI -Clicky- as this has been answered more than once.

Also, system icons, are part of system files, thus, the topic needs to be placed in that sub-forum.

You would need two different things.

1. A program like iconpackager or iconphile to change the icons (my computer, my music, etc...)

2. a modified shell32.dll file to match your icon scheme. This file contains all the icons that have to do with the system (open/save dialogs, toolbars, control panel icons, etc...)

Open/Save dialog has a different .dll file to mess with: check here

Ok- several different ways to change icons. If you want to change My Computer and My Documents on the desktop, go to Desktop Properties --> Desktop (Tab)--> and then on the bottom there's something that says customize desktop. Choose that. I think you can figure the rest out.

If you want a massive system overhaul, you'll have to replace shell32.dll (for most of the icons; there are some icons in other dlls, but changing shell32.dll will change most of them).

I reccomend downloading Iceman's shell32 (http://www.jonmega.com/iceman/sysfiles/download_SP1.php --> and choose shell32.dll).

Or, download Flyakites installer! Much easier, and you can completely change your entire system, not just the icons. His new version (5.1) was just released. Check it out here: http://flyakite.msfnhosting.com/osx/ (it's been so popular in the last week that sometimes the bandwith is exceeded)

If all this is too intense, there are free programs out there that you can change icons to what you what. IconPackager, by Stardock, is shareware, but I find IconPhile (freeware) great!

I hope this helps!
