[Help] wtf Is Happening To My Computer

ok my computer has been acting wierd all day. it seems the registry files are messed up cuase all my programs thing its there first time opening it, but only did it once for each(not reacruing problem).

also icons arnt showong up as icons on the desktop, meaning if i take a shortcut of my computer and drop it on the desktop it turns into the default icon wish is this a blank paper.

that and i cant seem to delete a png that i downloaded for a game that i downloaded today, when i drag to the dock bar makes the dock bar crash. i think the png is the virus, but i scanned it and it was fine.

i tried doing a system restore to 2 days ago and didnt do anything.

i have no idea whats goin on, can some one help.

hmmmm, that is odd. could be a virus, but i highly doubt it. Sounds more to me like a corrupt registry, or something along those lines.

As I said im not sure, but if it were me, i would pull everything off,and reformat and reinstall, but wait till some other people respond to give you a better idea of what is what.

Good luck

sorry seph, but hey its in the right thread at least ;)

one wierd thing though, why would my icons on my desktop not show up. thats freaking wierd, right.

edit:no double posting for me. i really want to deleat this png(or what ever it is since i cant get to properties on it) and remove it, but it wont let me, give me that is being used by a program or user jive, and i dont see how its being used by a nother program when its just a png. witch makes me thing its the culprit.

ok, one of my favorite tricks is to kill every running process in the task manager. Anything that can be killed must be killed. Then in the task manager, click file, new task browse. Browse to the folder of that png, right click it and delete it. if that doesnt work, than i really dont know what else to tell you.

Close anything and everything that could be interacting with it. Especially explorer.

Run a cmd window.

type: del /f pngfile.png

That usually does the trick for me.

ok, i have had no luck removing it, after closeing almost everything(several attemps with closing the wrong thing and the system shuting down). it still says its being used by a program...

i have 3 differnt users on my computer. and oddly enough the problem dosn't seem to be happening with the other users. so my question now is, isntead of backing up all my stuff(would would take up a lot of time)and restorying my comp(more time) and redownlaoding everying(MORE TIME, see a trend here) can i just remove the user thats having all the issues. id have to move the stuff in my documents so i dont lose it. but it should work right.

oh and if my post are getting criptic its casue its 4 am were i am right now.

EDIT: ok got some sleep, and i just went back to this comeputer, and know trillian wont load up my aol friends, and the dockbar isn't loaidn up correctly, so my computer is officially f'd. so im backen up stuff, like my pictures, and my work. and im just gonna restore the stupid thing.....god i hate computers.

there is a program out there called Who Lock Me 1.04. that will let you see what program is using that file and then you can kill it to delet it. this a great program has gotten me out of a few jams.

yup, wholockme can help you: http://www.dr-hoiby.com/WhoLockMe/

deleting from the command prompt should work, though.

scan for viruses and spyware, try a system restore, chkdsk. you might try sfc as well or a repair installation.

what did you do to get all these problems?

I'm getting the same problem with YzDock, and nothing here fixed it. And I'm not going to reformat. Every time I try to change a PNG image for the dock it freakn crashes. I'm pist. Is there any way to fix it. Or any way to manually change a PNG without using the Dock.

Thanks

I LOVE YOU !!!

did you already try them?

#144717

I tried the uxteme.dll file.

I didn't reboot yet though, and I had the iTunes docklet ( completly removed it )and freakn Style XP 2.0

I paid for nothing

I'm sure it'll work though, it worked befoe StyleXP 2.

Thanks ;)

#144719

oh, i thought you were trying to fix the dock.

but yeah, uxtheme patch is the way to go. if you have any problems with it, just ask me. i have several patches you can try.

#144720

I was trying to fix the dock issue.

And after reading the articles you recomnded I found out I'm not the only one that has had that problem ( using YzDock and StyleXP 2.0 ) so I'm going to try using the uxtheme.dll but should I uninstall StyleXP 2 before rebooting?

thanks

i think you exposed your system to too much darkness :P

#144796

sorry we couldn't help you grim, but it's now cleaner than before. :)

baby, uninstall stylexp first, and remove it completely (reg keys and all) for cleanliness. then apply the patch, let it process, cancel the wfp dialog and reboot. that's it. ^_^
