Since I will be moving to Los Angeles,CA this fall, can somebody tell me how big that city really is? I'm interested.Is it bigger than the isle of Manhattan and how many people live there? Also,please tell me where can I find a GOOD L.A. map?
I googled for some,but they are not that good.

i've never been to l.a., but i do know it's larger than manhattan... i lived in ny up until about 2 years ago... that's only about 2 miles wide and 10 miles long... from everything i know of l.a., it's a lot more sprawled out than that. ny is a subway city, la is definitely a car city. (look at all the freeway traffic, there's your proof everyone has a car there, they just all to get into them at the same time)

No. L.A. has great public transportation and a subway. They even expanded their subway to outside L.A. county into others.

Having spent a few months in L.A., yes, you definitely need a car, unless you want to commute with homeless / poor people, drug addicts and parolees.
But L.A. is a blast. I love it there, and I'm from New York originally. Ultimately though, if I had to choose, it would be New York hands down. But that's way offtopic. :-p

i grew up in LA and lived there for 18 years.
LA is huge. i mean freaking huge. i live 45 minutes from downtown and i'm still in los angeles county. for people from NY who say 'hey i live 45 minutes from the city, and i don't say i'm from new york', that's because it's cool to be from new york. if you lived downtown in LA, you're in the hood. think watts and south central.
that having been said, you'll need a car. it's not like the northeast where you're in another state after driving 40 minutes. you go any direction for 4 hours you're still in california.
and the only people who care about smog are tree hugging hippies from oregon
you'll hardly notice
the thick plumes of brown haze is a once in a millenium event, and it only happens when there's no wind
L.a Doesn't smog any more, the envirement has been clean since 2000, ever since the goverment started putting their nose in the problem, Not likeing what they where smelling mite i add..
I live in san fransisco, I visit L.a all the time.

that is so true....Hit the nail on the head. Those hippies from San Francisco always come down here and ruin are parade. I would love to visit New York, but if i had to choose, i would choose Socal. Why? It has the best weather......If your moving to L.A. your moving to the center of it all baby. And yes you will need a car. Although there is good transportation, their are a lot more people using it everyday, and those damn bus strikes....psh plz. But the traffic is terrible, i would stay away from the 405, 5, 120, orange crush.....get the point? Or leave really early say like 3am and you will be at work in no time [ that is if you use the freeway ]

i don't doubt LA has the worst air, but compared to the air in india and hong kong-- you could practically bottle up what we have and start an oxygen bar over there
