[help] Ati Drivers Fsck Up My Box

First, I'm using a 9800 PRO with driver version 6.14.1.6307

Here's a timeline of events leading up to the present state of my computer:

1. I play Bf1942. I'm getting unplayable framerates, which has never even come close to happening before.

2. I decide I need to reinstall drivers/see if there are new ones.

3. I run Windows Update; there are newer drivers (version 6.14.10.6436) for my video card; I install them; restart.

4. Computer won't boot, restarts automatically before the login window.

5. I select "last known good config."

6. In Windows, rundll32 (or is it run32.dll?) crashes, so I can't use the Control Panel. Also, Internet Exlorer crashes (not like I use it anyway).

7. I go to ATI's site and install the drivers form there, but part 4-6 repeats -_- .

What sould I do  ? Thx.

I got the same problem with my AIW 9800 PRO

same seris of steps. I called cusumer servive (which sucks because it's only free for the

first 30 days IF you register online WTF ) they said that never update a driver.

Uninstall the current driver and the ATI Control Panel and ATI TV, ATI Multimedia Center , ATI EVERTHING DAMN IT!!!!!! everything that you installed from ATI accept for demos and screensavers and Wallpapres. Then reboot. Then Windows will be like "New Hardware Found" Exit that and install all the latest programs and drivers from their website.

Hope that helps.

As they say on Ati.com: "If you have no problems, don't update your drivers."

You can check that yourself :)

go to www.omegadrivers.com best ati drivers you can get. even ati says it.

actually what they are refering to... is don't use windows update, to update drivers...

Btw... don't ever use it to update drivers for ANY hardware...

I have seen and exprienced windows update drivers screw up vast amouts of HW driver installs...

MS usually will make code changes to drivers submitted for winupdate... which can cause issues...

I personally have 4 radeons myself from the first one released on to a modded 9500np -> 9700pro.

So I have extensive knowlege of the product... I would do what babypapichulo said...

Uninstall all the ATI drivers, (you don't need to uninstall MMC)

And then install the latest directly from ATI

BTW catalyst 4.4 was released yesterday

And about BF1942... I play this regualarly, poor FPS comes down to 1 thing... bad netcode, its lag... plain and simple.

And now for some FUD control...

Omegadrivers are not nescassarly the best drivers, remember thease are hacked drivers, taking files from different 'official' driver releases, there is no code changes.

And as far as ATI saying that they are the best you can get, thats total BS.

The only thing ATI has ever said about Omega is that its cool they exist, and defended what omega is doing, when Nvidia slapped Omega with a seace and desist order.

Also as far as CS/TS from ATI... sorry your 1 time expierence wasn't that good, but thats 1 time... ATI's support has done a complete 180 from 2 years ago, and these guys are great now... try the rage3d.com forums... even ati enginereers and support staff hang out in the forums trying to help people.

Yea, but I tried several servers and it felt more like ****ty FPS (hardware-related) than lag ("bad netcode"/admin dloading pr0n/high ping) ;) .

Anyway, thx, that did the trick B) . Now back to your regularly scheduled program...
