[help] Svchost Memory Issues...

Hey, everybody.

recently, when i boot my computer, it will crash, if i don't interfere. i've figured out that the reason for this instability is that my svchost.exe that runs my visualstyles (aka uxtheme.dll) is taking up WAY too many handles. when it first boots, it's somewhere around 900, and it quickly climbs to around 1,100. if left unchecked, it'll basically crash my system every time. i've found that killing and restarting it will give me much more reasonable numbers, around 580. the stability increase is immense.

in any case, i'd like to know if anybody else has ever had this problem... and if so, how did you solve it? if nobody else has experienced this, does anyone have any suggestions on how i could deal with it, besides manually killing and restarting the service?

I know that my PC sometimes runs up to 7 svchost.exe at one time. I would try this:

Open up the Serices index. Turn off the services that use the svchost.exe one at a time and reboot.

I'm sorry I couldnt give a better answer but this may help.

NEVER just go and stop services, especially from msconfig. Always use Services.msc. The best info you can get is Blackviper's page. It's a lot to read, but when no programs running i have 10 processes.

If you're running XP, run "tasklist/svc" from the command prompt to see which processes are associated with which services. Check if the extra svhosts are being controlled by a different service that can be safely disabled.

i've never had a problem with svchost or uxtheme.

definitely use black viper's guide to streamline your system.

also make sure you don't have viruses. scvhost is a virus, for example.

it's not that you can't use msconfig; it's just riskier if you do. that's why people recommend using services.msc instead.

yeah, i've already tweaked my system out with BlackViper's page's help. i'm sure that it's the themes' svchost as well, because when i kill it, my themes go away. i dunno, i guess it's back to the drawing board. thanks though guys. if anyone has any suggestions, tell me.

... anyway, onto the subject of this post...

first of all, if this thread is misplaced, then im sorry, perhaps you can tell me where to write it?.

Well, i've been having some troubles with some svchost (i think its the networking one), randomly it says that some failure has happened and that svchost has to end (generic host services bla bla bla) and that's the end of my internet connection and i have to restart the PC. Now, these troubles weren't here before installing the style, so i'd like to know if anyone had a trouble like this, or how to solve it? coz i dont really want to uninstall this style lol,

p.s.: i have a winxp sp2, modem and dial-up. and also 7 svchost working at once.
