great first apple, not another person we gotta keep outa sight with.

Nah, it's ok... There are so many things out there that use the basic formula of a cursor and a circle or target as a logo... and ours don't follow the colours etc of theirs... It will be fine :) Trust me... I'm (not) a doctor ;)

Major differences

1, our arrow is right on the center

2, ours is not a bullseye

3, their's is plain our is complex with colors

I'm pretty sure they don't really care to begin with.

Sorry, people. I just didn't see the buydomains logo before. I'm the designer of the aqua-soft logo. If i knew about that logo, I, probably, didn't go further with the idea.

btw, I didn't want to explain it at that time (before the poll) because I always thought that explaining the design is a sign of no good design, but i find that there's a good reason now:

the base of the logo is really a simple concept and it differs from the buydomains one.

It is just only the effect produced when you touch the water (Aqua) like in the picture below. the water is touched by a cursor (to represent the Soft).

water%20drop.jpg.

I did that to mantain the Aqua spirit but with a different point of view.

And I think it doesn't need further explanation. I can explain this to the guys of Buydomains whenever they want. Leave this to me.

Expect some good wallpapers, icons with this concept. Just give me more time..Thanks

*golf clap*

Fer has spoken.... i do expect some nice walls my friend so chop chop :P

#138993

good call, fer! i am not saying that we copied at all, i just simply stated that the logos had similar qualities. nothing to put down either because they are similar. *waits for walls*

I mean no disrespect by this whatsoever in any way shape or form. But, it is far too close a coincidence for my liking. I'm not saying that fer flat out stole an idea and pawned it off as his own, but the two are far too similar in appearance to be just a coincidence.

Again, i'm not flaming anyone, i dont want this to be read as a hostile post or anything like that.

I will say this however, there is a strong possibility that Fer may have seen the buydomains logo before and fed off the idea. there is nothing wrong with that at all, part of being a designer is feeding off of and responding to other designs. My gripe is with the fact of how close in appearance they are. It is more than just a coincidence. Sorry

#145367

They aren't that close to be a coincidence?!? If Fer's logo was actually a target instead of a ripple then maybe...

Anyways, loads of companies use this sort of logo.

Here's another: http://www.wprasek.com/graphics/illustrati...s/popups/13.htm

ya know, when juno made some walls a long time ago that were using someone elses images (that he was allowed to do so as they were stock images) people ate him alive for it. The pics were slightly modified from the original, but people still raised hell about it.

Ago, we had another contest here, it was either a banner contest or something like that, the winner used a picture of someone elses, and basically stole the idea, that was another drama that unfolded.

So why is it now, that this logo is an almost one to one copy of the buy domains logo with the exception of the color, that it is perfectly ok. This is a double standard, and it bothers me a little bit.

People are having a tendancy to pull favorites here, and if I did something like that, people would eat me alive for it.

So from a moderators stand point i would like to know how they feel about this? What is their standpoint? I know fer explains his concept behind this, but we havent heard this concept until he was questioned about it. And please dont take this as i ahve anything against fer, i dont, i would take this position despite who the made the logo.

#145377

ok here is how I stand.

Firstly, Photo, there is a bit of double standards on this copyright things... for example we do rip contents and resource form apple and spread files that break windows eula. But that is a different story and we dont want to open THAT can of worms.

Now, in regards to the logo... as it may appear like fer's logo is "too close to not be a rip", the argument he puts through in regards of what it means and how the logo represents aqua-soft, gives it an edge in terms of its originality. You have to agree that concentric circles could be used for a lot of purposes in terms of logo creation (wireless technology companies, sound broadcasting companies, etcetera).

If the design fed off the buydomains logo (either conciously or subconsciously), i do not see anything wrong with it as it didnt use the buydomains artist resources, nor did he replicate the logo.

This is MY point of view.

Now, Please, let us not turn this into a flame war, lets not bring old turmoils up. I am sure that we could at least once have a discussion like this without making the thread en up in the trash can.

Please, think twice before you post... i will be looking over this thread.

As usual I agree with photo.

This our logo is almost exactly the same! Just because it isn't identical, it doesnt mean the idea was ripped from there.

It seems more than a coincidence to me, the arrow, the general style, even the size. It seems the buydomains logo was more than just a base of inspiration.

those are conjectures Alilm... lets keep an open mind in both directions, it may be as much as it may not.

understood :D it was more of a message to everyone hehehe...

#145397

How about we contact them to take a look at it and have them tell us what they think? Seriously, that will probably be the only way to settle this. And frankly, I don't think they would care that much. After all, we are not gaining any profit from the logo or this site. Aren't we Timmie? ;)

#145399

IMHO I don't see enough of a similarity to warrant further investigation. Again, IMHO, Fer has given more than convincing reasons as to dispel any suggestion of bad faith.

As for the general (offtopic) ripping argument (you started it Seph ), again IMHO, I think the reasoning is it's OK to rip the big guys who do this for a profit, but it's not OK to rip the individuals/small guys who do this for free and for its own artistic value (in most cases anyway).

Also, when you are emulating apple, everyone knows where you got your idea from, but when you rip the work of an individual, you are misleading people into thinking that its your own work, which IMHO is wrong.

This post has been flame tested using 'IMHO Version 1.0'

#145412

Yeah, this doesnt have to be a flame war, as im not saying he did anything wrong per se. And yes seph, i agree with you completely about eh apple thing, but remember, no one is coming here saying i created this finder, or safari, or whatever, and it is all original. I mean everyone knows we are emulating apple, and noone questions where the resources come from.

that being said, this logo is different, it was part of a competition to find a logo for our dear site, an original logo mind you. Now I know he said what inspiration he had, but as i said early, this inspiration was not mentioned till he was questioned about it.

Like alilm said, its too close for comfort, overall size is the same, size of the bullsyed water thing is the same, cursor size is the same, cursor position is this same. If you change the color from blue to red, we have almost and identical logo.

I slightly feel there were other logos that were up for the competion that were far more original than this one, now that i see the similarity. When i first saw this logo there was a comfortable familiarity about it that i couldnt quite pinpoint.

I dont want this thread to close as i want to hear others opinions of this, so please people keep this respectable and on topic. Dont be mean, that isnt the point. Does anyone else feel that this is too close a copy to an already existing logo to have been pure originality?

Good point, however, as i stated, it is a very easy to repeat concept... although, i see where you guys (you and alilm) are coming from in terms of the similarity, cause they are REALLY similar.

IMO, the originality of this logo is the concept that it binds visually to the content of the site. I think the aqua-soft concept couldnt have been better portrayed.

If you think about it too, how could you draw concentric lines of water drops? and the mouse pointer, i first thought, hmm it is using the same orientation and all but then again, what computer has normal cursors that start in the left and point right? (mirrored version of the pointer in the logo now).

#145417

just for illustrative purposes, i want people to see the two side by side, im sorry its so sloppy just a quick job for our purposes here

#145419

a picture is worth a thousand words... they are shockingly similar.

But, as i have said.

1.- The concept behind fer's logo leads VERY easily to an image like this one... they have different concepts that can be represented the same... just as cars have 4 wheels and if you changed the chassis design tweaks, what do you have? the same.

2.- The way Fer sustained the reason of the logo design, doesn't let me think of it as a rip...

#145423

i believe fer, he said he got inspired from the water ripple. ;) plus i feel the logo has many differences

1) its not a target, its all basicle the same colors, no spaces between them.

2) the arrow is in a different place

3) the words dont go across it

anyway all and all there is no copyright infringment, they are selling domains and we are an aqua community, and the logo is different. and also as everyone else said there are hundreds of companys who have a logo like that

#145455

Sorry to bring this up again so late after the last post.

Personally, I think Fer didn't intentionally "rip" anything, even though the logos are similar in design.

I've made an animated Gif (since Photo's doesn't show up for me, I can't see what he did)

You all be the judges, I suppose, but I'm with Fer.
